PART #62
While Catherine and George were chatting, Bow returned. He left his horse at the stable, and walked toward the main house. He could see that Catherine was entertaining a man on the front porch. She waved to him, and he smiled and waved back. He remembered her soft warm body resting against his the night before. He thought of her fragrance, and the way her hair hung down in curls across her shoulders as she slept. He had thought he could not breathe as he watched her. She was so beautiful, and the love he felt for her was overpowering. He knew at that moment there was nothing he would not do for her.
He walked up the stairs of the front porch, and over to the table where George and Catherine sat. He bent over, kissed her, and then extended his hand to George and said, “Hello, I am Bowregard LaFaye; the lady with whom you are chatting is my wife.”
George thought he caught a little possessive tone in the voice of Bowregard LaFaye. He smiled; and said, “Hello, I am George Sheffield. I happen to be your lovely wife’s cousin from England.” Bow laughed, patted George on the back, and said, “So, you’re George. I have heard a lot about you from Catherine. So, how do you like the Americas so far?” Catherine said, “Bow, he only arrived this afternoon. He came into Lake Charles on the ship that Captain LeFebvre took out for you.”
Bow said, “Catherine, I saw Capatain LeFebvre this afternoon, and visited with him about the trip. I missed seeing your cousin though.” Catherine inquired how his search for men had gone. He said, “I found some men who would be willing to work the saw mill. But, I still need to find a man who will manage the saw mill.” Catherine said, “I have tried to talk George into staying, and working in that position.” George laughed; and said, “And I told Catherine I knew absolutely nothing about a saw mill. All my work experience is in the silver business.” Bow asked, “Were you in a managerial position?” “Yes, I was,” answered George. Bow said, “If you have worked in management, then at least you are familiar with managing a business.”
George said, “Wait a minute you two; I have not even said I wanted to remain here in the Americas. I only arrived this afternoon. How do I know this is where I would like to settle down?” At that moment, Marguerite came out, and announced that dinner would be ready in twenty minutes. Catherine got up; and said, “George, perhaps you would like to wash yourself before we eat. I will have Manobo take your luggage to your room.” Catherine turned toward Marguerite, and asked, “Marguerite would you ask Manobo to come out, and get George’s luggage?”
Bow saw George watching Marguerite, and he recognized that look. It was the same look he had when he had first seen Catherine. George had been in the Americas just a few hours. Bow thought, “Give him a few more days around Marguerite, and he will probably be wanting to remain in the Americas.”
Bow and Catherine walked hand in hand into the house; and Bow whispered to her, “Your cousin is infatuated with Marguerite.” Catherine smiled, “Yes, my dear, I know.” “You’re going to use that to your advantage, aren’t you, my sweet?” Catherine said, “Who me? I would never think of doing that.” Bow gave her a light pat on the arm; and said, “Sure you would.”
Dinner was served at six o’clock, and Bow and Catherine sat at each end of the table. George and Marguerite were placed across from each other. Manobo and Cook served the meal which consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh garden peas, and stewed apples with cinnamon. Cook had prepared some French bread with lots of freshly churned butter; and for dessert, there was a plantation peach pie. Catherine watched George as he ate, and saw that he appeared to be enjoying the food.
George said, “My compliments to the one who prepared all that delicious food.” Catherine said, “George, much of the food was prepared by Marguerite.” Marguerite was visably blushing when Catherine told George she had prepared the food. He said, “Marguerite, if you did this, it was wonderful.” Marguerite said shyly, “Thank you, I enjoy cooking.” She said, “I didn’t make the bread, Cook did that.” George told her, “I can’t remember when I have tasted such delicious peach pie.”
Manobo came to clear the dishes from the table, and Marguerite asked to be excused to go tend to Jean Baptiste. Catherine told her to take all the time she needed. She could see that George was disappointed when she left the table. He turned to Catherine and said, “Catherine, Marguerite is a valuable asset. She would do wonders in your kitchen.” Catherine said, “George, Marguerite is a multi-talented person; she will do well in whatever area she happens to be placed.”
