PART #63
The next morning Bow asked George if he would like to take a ride out to the saw mill. He said, “I have some men coming to check out the equipment to let us know what needs to be done to bring it back to functional order. I believe Marguerite is going along so that she can look over the office, and see what she might be able to use. She will probably do the book work here because of the baby. We may be bringing some things back with us so an office can be set up for her.”
When George discovered that Marguerite was going along, he decided it would probably be a good idea for him to go too. He asked, “Is Catherine coming along?” Bow answered, “I don’t think Catherine is feeling well this morning; so she will probably stay here, and take care of Jean Baptiste for Marguerite. She didn’t feel like she wanted to ride in a carriage with an upset stomach.”
Soon the carriage departed, and George managed to sit beside Marguerite on the ride. Bow had to smile for he could see George was engaging Marguerite in conversation as much as possible. It gave him an excuse to look at her without suspicion. It was also obvious that all the attention was a little overpowering for Marguerite. Bow thought he should probably tell Catherine to warn George not to push too hard for Marguerite had been through so much lately. The last thing she needed now in her life was another man.
Eventually they reached the saw mill, and Bow pulled up beside the office. George helped Marguerite down from the carriage, and all three walked inside. Bow was glad he had picked up the things that had been strewn across the desk and floor. He really did not want to have to explain anything about the saw mill to George.
Bow knew it wasn’t all that important that Marguerite ride out to the saw mill today. He had a pretty good idea what would be needed for an office back at the plantation, but he suggested it for he knew George would be delighted to have her company.
Marguerite looked around the office and said, “This reminds me of the office my father used to talk about when I was younger.” George asked her questions about her childhood, and found her comments about her family to be most interesting. He could not believe she was the only girl with all those brothers. She told him how protective they had always been of her. She said, “Most young men would never look at me twice for they knew my brothers would never permit it. No one wanted to go up against the Robichaud brothers. There were six of them, and they all knew how to throw a good punch.”
George thought for a few minutes about those six brothers; and asked, “Marguerite, how did you ever meet your husband?” Marguerite became very quiet, and George felt as if he had intruded in an area he had no right to intrude. He stammered, “Marguerite, I’m so sorry; I had no right to ask you.” He could see tears in her eyes as she looked at him. “Jean Pierre has been dead for only a few days; it is rather difficult for me to talk about him just yet.” George said, “Of course, I do understand. Please forget I even asked the question.”
Marguerite walked around the office and asked Bow if they could take the desk and cabinet back to the plantation. He said, “I don’t see why not Marguerite. You will probably want the chair that goes with the desk, won’t you?” “Yes, I will want that,” she said. “We might want to take the safe back with us,” said Bow. Marguerite said, “That would probably be a good idea.” George helped Bow load the various pieces of office furniture into the carriage. Bow said, “I need to look at the equipment; so you can stay here in the office, or sit in the carriage while I look around. The men should be here very soon to look at the equipment.”
Marguerite decided she would stay in the office, and George said he would go with Bow to look at the equipment. As they walked towards the equipment, Bow said, “George, I can see you have eyes for Marguerite, but you must remember she just lost her husband, and they were very much in love when he was killed. You must not try to push her into a relationship, or you will actually drive her farther away. Try to exercise some restraint.” George looked at Bow, “Does it appear I am pushing her?” “Yes, George, it does appear you are pushing her,” said Bow.
Bow could hear the sound of horses approaching, and saw some riders coming their way. He assumed this was the group of men who were to come, and look at the equipment. When the riders got closer to Bow, he realized they were some of the men who used to work for Joshua at the saw mill. They circled Bow and George, and a few had guns pointed at them. Bow wondered if these men were part of the group who had broken into the office earlier. He tried to remain calm as he asked, “What is it you want?” They said, “We want our money.” Bow asked, “What money are you talking about?” “We want the wages Joshua Sallier promised us, and never gave us.”
