PART #11
Catherine demanded that Bowregard tell her where he had put her money. He said, “Catherine, I did not take your money. I will try to do what I can to help you locate your money.” She stormed at him, “Don’t lie to me; I know you took the money.” He calmly said, “Catherine, how do you know I took your money? Try to be reasonable. I left you at the hotel, and went down to the docks to check on a shipment of art. If you don’t believe me, please feel free to go with me back to the docks, and I will have you talk with the people who are unloading the ship that came into port. They will tell you that I was there.”
Catherine was so upset she barely heard what Bowregard was saying. She had only one thought, “Bowregard has stolen my money.” He saw it was useless trying to reason with a hysterical woman; and started walking toward the door. When he reached the door, he turned around; and said, “Catherine, when you calm down you can reach me at the Le Bleu plantation. I am staying with Joshua for a while.”
Bowregard walked out of the hotel, climbed into his carriage, and slapped the reins on the horses to start the trip to the Le Bleu plantation. He wondered why that stubborn, self-willed woman had not gone to the bank with all that money. He could understand why she would be suspicious of him, but he knew nothing about the money. He did know there was considerable stealing in the area. There was much poverty; and theft was a constant problem. He chided himself for not warning Catherine about the problem, but he had thought she had enough sense to handle the money in a business-like way. The town had grown by a huge percentage in the 1880’s, and there were some unsavory characters drifting around the town.
He would return tomorrow, and talk to the owner of the hotel. It was possible one of the maids or a bellboy had gone to her room, and found the money. She did have the appearance of a moneyed person. He knew thieves watched for moneyed people, especially women, for they were easy prey.
Catherine was pacing the floor in her room. What could she do about this situation? How could she possibly tell her family she had lost all the money for the silver bowl? She could not see how she could return home and face her family. Her cousin, George, would never stop ridiculing her. She knew her father would say, “Catherine, I told you George should have been the one to go to the Americas. They are a lusty bunch in that new land. It’s no place for a young woman like yourself to go.” Why did she always have to learn things the hard way?
As she paced the floor, she made a decision. She would go to Joshua Sallier; and tell him about the pirate taking over their ship, and robbing the passengers. She would also tell him his cousin was the pirate in charge. She was sure he would be shocked, but hopefully this would engage his help in getting the money returned from Bowregard. Once she had formulated her plan, she was able to calm down enough to order her evening meal.
The next morning the bellboy came to her door, and told her a carriage was outside waiting to take her to the Le Bleu plantation. She walked down the stairs, and went outside into the bright sunshine. The driver was waiting to help her into the carriage, and offered her his hand. Once she was settled inside the carriage; the driver clicked to the horses, and they started down the street towards the outer edge of town and out into the country.
To be continued...
