PART #12
Bowregard had not mentioned to Catherine the ship that brought in the art was actually the ship on which she was a passenger. His cousin, Joshua, had wanted some paintings that he had heard were being shipped from Europe. He told Bowregard that he wanted him and his men to intercept the ship that was carrying the art. One of the paintings he desired was a painting by Monet called La cathédrale de Rouen. Joshua had received word the painting was on the ship. There were other pieces of art that Joshua wanted, but the Monet was especially desired. The ship was also carrying a young woman who was to deliver a large silver punch bowl he had ordered from England. The punch bowl was to be found, and stolen as well.
Joshua and Bowregard were partners in business. Bowregard obtained the objects that Joshua wanted; and Joshua, who had a keen eye for what would sell, handled the business of merchandising the products. They were doing quite well with their arrangement. Joshua was highly respected, and between the two of them they were managing to meet the needs of their customers. They had progressed to a point financially that Bowregard was going to give up being a pirate, and turn to shipping as a legitimate business.
When he arrived at the Le Bleu plantation, Joshua met him at the carriage house. Joshua asked Bowregard, “Did you get the English lady back to town?” Bowregard unhooked the horses, and began rubbing them down. He turned to Joshua; and said, “I dropped her off at the hotel, reminded her to go to the bank and get a bank note, then I left. I went down to the docks to see if the ship had come into port with the art. The art is here, by the way. It’s in the back of the carriage.” Joshua went to the back of the carriage, and looked at the pieces that Bowregard’s men had managed to steal from the ship. Bowregard said, “You will never guess what has happened.”
Joshua said, “I don’t believe I like the sound of that Bow.” Bowregard said, “That stubborn woman did not go to the bank, and instead put her money in her luggage, and went for a walk. When she returned, she found the money had been stolen. Of course she believes I stole it.”
Joshua said, “Well didn’t you tell her you had not stolen the money?” “Of course I told her that, but since she already knows I am a pirate, she doesn’t believe me.” Bowregard sadly shook his head; and said, “I tell you people will steal you blind around this area.” Joshua laughed, “Don’t you think that sounds a bit hypocritical coming from a pirate?” “I don’t see it as being a pirate, I see it as meeting the needs of our clients,” said Bowregard. “Cousin, you may see it that way, but you know if you are caught, you will be dancing the “hempen jig.” Bowregard said, “I have done my last act of piracy. I have no desire to be swinging by the hempen rope. From this day forward everything is going to be legitimate.”
Joshua asked, “Have you decided if you are going to settle here or will you remain in New Orleans?” Bowregard said, “I believe I will settle here. I will have to go to New Orleans, and bring back my things. I think I will sell the “Silver Lantern.”
Joshua asked, “Cousin, where will you live?” Bowregard said, “With the money I get for the Silver Lantern, I think I will build a home in Lake Charles. I am going to turn into one respectable fellow.” Joshua laughed and said, “Now that is something I will want to see.” Bowregard looked at Joshua; and with a laugh said, “If you can do it, so can I.”
The men saw a carriage approaching; and Joshua said, “Oh I forgot to tell you that your English lady friend sent a message saying she wanted to visit me.” Bowregard said, “No doubt she is coming out here to try to garner your support to have me arrested for stealing her money. It’s going to be interesting to see how you are going to work your way around this situation, Joshua,” said Bowregard. “I wonder what the sweet lady would think if she knew all our business ventures have been your idea.” Joshua laughed and said, “Well, I don’t intend to tell her those things, Bow.”
To be continued...
