PART #15

The next morning Bow took one of the horses from the stable, and rode back into Lake Charles. He went to the hotel, and spent some time talking to the owner. He knew the owner well, and felt he would be perfectly honest with him. He walked up to the desk; and said, “I would like to speak to Mr. Arnaud.” Soon, a tall, dark man came to the desk. He said, “Good morning, Bowregard.” “Good morning to you Philip. I was wondering if you could give me some information.” Philip smiled; and said, “I will certainly do what I can to help you.”

Bowregard asked him how well he knew the lady from England who was called Miss Catherine. He replied, “I have only talked to her briefly.” Bowregard asked, “Two days ago in the late afternoon or early evening, did anyone come to the hotel, and ask about her or the location of her room?” Philip thought for awhile, then said, “As I recall there was a man who came in here asking about her.” “Could you describe him for me?” asked Bowregard. “I don’t remember anything too unusual about his appearance except for the fact he walked with a pronounced limp,” said Philip. Bowregard asked, “Was the man approximately forty years of age? Did he have blond hair and blue eyes?” “Yes, I do believe that would describe the man,” replied Philip. Bowregard thanked him, and walked outside to the street. He was fuming, “So it was Joshua who had arranged for Catherine’s money to be stolen.” The description fit one of the men who worked at the sawmill for Joshua. He was a mean and surly man, and walked with a limp due to an injury he had received while working at the sawmill. Joshua used him whenever he wanted something done that required someone with few scrupples.

After Bowregard calmed down somewhat, he went back into the hotel. Philip was still at the desk when Bowregard asked, “Philip, did you tell that man which room was Miss Catherine’s?” “Oh no, I would never do anything like that,” Philip remarked. “Do you remember if he left right away?” asked Bowregard. Philip thought for a moment, then he said, “You know I was called about some emergency in the kitchen, so I excused myself to take care of that matter. When I returned to the desk, he was gone.” Bowregard thanked Philip, and started walking toward the door. Philip called out to him, “Did I do something wrong Bowregard?” Bowregard turned, flashed a big smile at him, and said, “Oh no, Philip, you just gave me the information I was seeking; and I do thank you for that.”

Once again Bowregard walked out of the hotel. He stood on the porch for a moment, deep in thought, then a smile crossed his face. He walked down the steps to the hitching post, untied the reins, and climbed onto the back of the horse. He had decided he would go down to the docks where his men were working at scraping the weed and barnacles from the bottom of the ship. Two of his other men were repairing some sails and rigging.

As Bowregard rode towards the docks, he smiled again. “Two can play at this game,” he thought. He was going to set up a robbery to get the money back that had been stolen from Catherine. This would take some careful planning on his part; and he would have to manage to get Joshua away from the plantation while the robbery was taking place. Perhaps he could arrange something special for Joshua and Catherine. If Joshua were away from the plantation with Catherine, he would never suspect anything. Bowregard knew he had a real penchant for a beautiful lady. He didn’t like the idea of Catherine spending time with Joshua, but that would be the best solution.

When Bowregard reached the docks, he found Oromo, Bo Cameroon, and Adari scraping on the ship. They were all seasoned pirates, and took no guff from any man. They were fearless, and Bowregard knew enough not to tangle with any of them. He called to them, and said he had something to discuss with them. He walked onto the ship; and the men left their work, and followed him across the gangplank.

Bowregard told them he wanted them to take some money back that had been stolen from the lady who had been on the ship. Adari had been with Bowregard when they broke into Catherine’s compartment on the ship. He had a puzzled look on his face, and Bowregard said, “It’s a long story, but she had money stolen from her that belongs to her family in England; and we are going to see that she gets it back.” Bowregard could see the looks on their faces; and said, “Don’t worry, there will be extra pay for you in doing this. But, I warn you this is to be highly secretive. No one is to hear about this, or it will be your necks. You will be doing the hempen jig if you are caught.” Oromo rubbed his neck when he heard that. He grinned; and said, “I’ve become quite attached to this neck, and I sure don’t want to see a hempen rope tied around it.”

To be continued...
