PART #16

Bowregard told his men he would have to plan the best way to get at the money, and when that information had been obtained he would return with final instructions. He said he had to make sure everything was set up first so there would be no surprises. Bowregard did not tell them where he felt the money was located. Of course none of the pirates knew about the business transactions between Joshua and Bowregard. Joshua had convinced Bowregard it would be best to keep his name out of their business activities.

As time had passed, Bowregard began to see that Joshua wanted him to take all the risks for the acts of piracy, while he moved all the goods that were stolen. Joshua made the initial contacts to find out what the people wanted to purchase. He also had contacts in Europe who kept him informed when certain articles were being shipped. Joshua, in turn, informed Bowregard as to the contents of the cargo on each ship. At that point it was left up to Bowregard and his band of pirates to seize the ships, and steal what they wanted. Bowregard brought the stolen goods back to the plantation where they were stored, and later transported to the respective buyers. Many of the buyers were unsuspecting of how the articles were obtained, but Joshua felt that was best to provide more protection for them. The fewer people who knew, the less chance there would be for them to be caught by the law.

After Bowregard worked out the amount of money he would pay his men, he rode back to the plantation. When he arrived at the stable; and was putting his horse away, he noticed that Joshua’s carriage and two of his best horses were gone. That must mean that Joshua had traveled somewhere of importance. He never took out his carriage unless he wanted to make an impression. That must mean he had gone into town to see Catherine, or he had made a contact to sell some of the articles that had been stolen from the ship a few days ago. Bowregard saw this as a golden opportunity to do some snooping. He felt he knew Joshua well enough to know he would never take that large amount of money into town to the bank. To take that amount of money would be suspicious even for a well-known businessman like Joshua.

Bowregard walked into the house, and called out. The old butler named Manobo came out of the kitchen and said, “Mr. Bowregard, is there something I can do for you?” Bowregard responded, “Manobo, I would like a sandwich made up in the kitchen. Could you also make me some lemonade? I am going to be doing some work in the study, and I would prefer not being disturbed. I’ll come get the sandwich in one-half hour.” Manobo looked at Bowregard; and said, “I will have it ready for you Sir.”

Bowregard went to the study, closed the door, located the key to the door in Joshua’s desk, then walked over and locked the door. After locking the door, he walked over to a painting that was hanging on the wall, pushed it aside, and exposed a wall safe. Joshua did not know that Bowregard knew the combination; he had never seen fit to offer that bit of information to him. He twisted the dial, and soon the door was opening.

He looked inside, and saw the bundles of money. Lifting it out he could tell this was the amount that had been given to Catherine for the bowl. He stood there shaking his head at what Joshua had done. Bowregard knew he had done some things in his own life he was not proud of doing, but this act made him angry. Was there nothing that Joshua wouldn’t do to get what he wanted? He was tempted to take the money right then and there, but it had to look like a robbery had been committed. He would see that various pieces of art would be stolen as well. If Bowregard took the money now, he would be identified as the thief. Manobo had already seen him, so he would be suspected. No, he would have to stick to his original plan. Somehow he would have to see to it that Joshua and the servants were out of the main house.

To be continued...
