PART #40

“Catherine, I found something interesting while I was in that office,” said Bow. “What is that?” she asked. “I found a roughly sketched map which led me to a building in the swamp. When I went inside, I found the building was filled to the brim with stolen articles. I have a feeling that Joshua was involved in a whole lot more then I had previously known. I am not sure what we should do about what I found. What would you suggest?”

Catherine looked at Bow; and said, “I suggest we contact the sheriff, and let him take care of the situation.” Bow said, “I was tempted to sell the merchandise which would help with your operating capital problem.” Catherine said, “No, Bow, if I can not get this plantation to pay for itself; and take care of Joshua’s debts, then it will be sold. There is no way I am going to try to come up with operating capital from stolen goods.”

Bow smiled at Catherine; and said, “Somehow, I knew you would feel that way. I will be riding back into Lake Charles, and I will talk with Peter Dunkirk and the sheriff about the stolen property I found.”

Bow placed the saddle bag upon a table, and then lifted out the log book and papers he had found strewn on the floor of the office. He handed the book to Catherine; and said, “This will help you to know the number and names of the men who did work for Joshua. Perhaps we could question them about the possibility of returning to work with a different owner.”

After Bow had talked with Catherine, he rode into town and went to the office of Peter Dunkirk. He told him what he had found, and asked him what he felt should be done. Peter told him he would talk to the sheriff about the building and contents that Bow had found in the swamp. He felt sure the stolen goods would be brought into Lake Charles. Hopefully there would be a way the rightful owners could be found, and the merchandise could be returned.

After Bow left Peter Dunkirk’s office, he rode down to the docks, then boarded his ship. Two of the men approached him, and asked when they would be putting out to sea. Bow told them it would be very soon. He had a few loose ends to tie up before he set sail, but that shouldn’t take much longer. It seemed to satisfy the men, and he could only hope it was true. He knew he didn’t dare wait much longer, or there would be problems with the freight he was to ship out. Not only would there be problems on the other end, but those who had shown good faith to allow him to deliver the freight would be upset. If he were going to function in the import-export business, he had to carry through with delivery.

Bow was under a great deal of pressure. He knew he would feel better once he got out to sea. When the sea air was blowing in his face, he would once again feel at home. Bow couldn’t explain what the sea meant to him; only people who lived the life he had lived would understand. The sea was in his blood. He wondered if he would be happy living exclusively on land. Somewhere along the way he would have to make a major decision. He knew he loved Catherine, but he also loved the sea. He also believed that Catherine would never be totally happy with a husband who spent more time on the sea then he did with her on land.

Bow realized he was thinking more and more about Catherine and their future together as husband and wife. Was it only a dream? Would there be a way this dream could work out for them? He could see some major hurdles ahead.

To be continued...
