PART #41
Catherine sat down at the table with the log book after Bow left, and went over the employee names, and the amount of salary that each man had been paid. None of the names seemed familiar; but she could do some checking into the background of the men. She wondered if Peter Dunkirk might be of help to her with this matter. He could tell her about the people since he had grown up in the Lake Charles area. She made a mental note to go visit Peter in his office.
She spoke aloud, “So Bow didn’t know Joshua as well as he thought he did.” Of course she knew that Bow wasn’t the only one who had been fooled by Joshua. She didn’t even want to think about how foolish she had behaved when taken in by Joshua’s charm. It seemed strange to her that Joshua would construct a building out in the swamp to hide stolen goods. Of course not many people would want to venture out into the swamps. She guessed it would be a good place to hide something you didn’t want people to find. She knew it would not be a place she would want to visit.
A thought struck her, “Who else knew about that building? Joshua would not have built that building all by himself?” She felt an urgent need to learn about individuals who may have been Joshua’s companions. Since Joshua had people working with him, she wondered if it were possible the building was being watched. What if someone had seen Bow out there and decided to move the stolen goods? What if the sheriff went out there, and found nothing? She wondered if anyone had thought of that possibility. If Joshua had been involved in something big, there had to be more people involved in this whole thing.
Catherine’s mind was working overtime on trying to unravel the mystery of the stolen goods. Manobo came into the room, and saw her muttering to herself. He looked around the room; and said, “Miss Catherine, were you talking to someone?” She laughed; and said, “Oh my, Manobo, I must admit I was talking to myself.” He grinned at her; and said, “I hear that can be dangerous.”
Catherine said, “Manobo, perhaps you could help me. Did Mr. Joshua have many close friends?” Manobo replied, “He had a few close friends.” Catherine said, “Can you tell me any of their names?” “Well now, let me think a minute,” said Manobo. “There was Mr. Bow, and Mr. Dunkirk, Mr. Jean Pierre Boudreau, and Mr. Salvadore Doucette. Miss Catherine there was also a lady who visited here often. Her name was Michele Doucette, and she was a sister to Salvadore.
Catherine said, “Now those names I have never heard mentioned by Joshua or Bow.” Manobo grinned, “Miss Catherine, I don’t think Mr. Bow knew any of those people except for Mr. Dunkirk. He was never here when the other three people were here.” Catherine asked, “Manobo, how would you describe these three people? Were they wealthy? Did they appear to be hard working people? Why was the lady present when the two men were here? What can you tell me about them?”
Manobo could see this was important to Catherine, and decided he would tell her what he knew. He said, “I don’t think I would not describe these people as hard working people. They always seemed to be planning and scheming. When I came into the room to bring food to them, they would always stop talking until I left. They were very careful to not talk in front of me. That woman was a hard person, and seemed to be the leader of the other two. She was the one who seemed to give the orders. It was obvious none of the men wanted to upset her in any way.”
Catherine said, “Manobo, there is something else I would like to ask. Was Mr. Dunkirk here when these people were here doing all the planning and scheming?” Manobo thought for a few moments, and then he answered, “No, Miss Catherine, he was never here when they came to visit Mr. Joshua. He was here a few times when Mr. Bow was here.” Catherine thanked Manobo, and told him he had been a great help to her.
Catherine decided she would take a trip into Lake Charles the next day. She was going to take the log book to Peter Dunkirk’s office, and do some questioning of her own. She was going to sit across the desk from Peter; and observe his facial expression when she asked him about Michele Doucette, her brother Salvadore, and Jean Pierre Boudreau. She wondered if it were possible that Peter Dunkirk had been involved in the matter of the stolen goods. It was nothing that Manobo had said, but there was something about that man that caused her to wonder.
