Ahh... because the house is full of memories. Everywhere you go in the house sets off individual memories that are more meaningful than the thing you were trying to go and do or to get. Also as you set off to get the thing you were working on the problem in your head and moved on to a different solution that reduced the need for the thing you sent yourself off for.

Indeed the ancient Greeks knew about this phenomenon and used it to remember long speeches. They imagined walking along a familiar route as they listened to the speech being given and were later able to recall it in great detail.

Your forgetfulness is simply a sign of a superbly retentive mind.

Or else that you are getting on a bit.
