The Jason Ferris situation is a tough one for the Bartercard Web Of Steel. The potential call-up to the Dragons has been a selling point to attract the type of player who will come to Wollongong and play his arse off to attract attention from Dragon scouts. The refusal to let Ferris go smacks in the face of this idea. The Butchers have been keen for the likes of Linde and Beath to better themselves, despite losing such strikepower. On the other hand, had the Butchers been successful in luring an ex NRL player as a captain coach, I doubt if they would consider his call-up in the same vein.
Ferris's desire to turn his back on Collies has done his coaching career no good and his job as coach is at the crux of the situation. He is not just a player, he is the boss and if the Dragons had any desire to sign him for 2004 they could have picked him up for a relatively low price.
The Dragons should not have considered Ferris, and he should not have considered the offer in the first place, especially when Mark Simon is in town. The offer seems like a panic move and Ferris's reaction will only throw open questions about his loyalty.
With all factors considered, I feel Collies are right to be upset. If he was just a player they would have to let him go, but as their coach they are right to dig their heels in.
