Subject: After Action Report for 11/8-11/9

Gentlemen,

Saturday, October 8th found me at Rough Creek Cemetery outside Granbury, Texas attending a marker deication for Mr. Levi Fine. Mr. Fine was a veteran of the Army of the Republic of Texas, and the Army of the Confederate States of America.

The Texas flag and the 11 star 1st National were posted at his grave, as well as an original 1842 Springfield musket, which was carried in Confederate hands during the War for Southern Independance. 2nd Color Sgt. Furlow, after having posted the colors, awaited the arrival of spectators and participants while standing guard at the cemetey's entrance, and was accompanied by Gary Whitfield, 2nd Lt. Commander, SCV in the task.

The history of Mr. Fine's service to the Army of the Republic of Texas was answered with a rifle salute, and the same was repeated after his service to the Confederate States was devulged.

Immediately after the last volley, a descendant of Mr. Fine approached the grave, loaded the musket, and fired a personal salute to his ancestor.

In this dedication, most of the men in the firing detail had not fired under such circumstances previously. The men were drilled before the ceremony, and rose to the occasion with the upmost of my compliments. The vollies were crisp and well-executed. At least two of Mr. Fine's descendants were among the detail, and I am confident that he is well-pleased. Look for some more recruits to swell our ranks, as we were noted upon the ceremony's program and some more fellows caught the bug!

November 9th found the Grays represented at Tolliver Cemetery in Lamkin, Texas. Boys, there is a passel of Reb vets buried there. In the dedication of a Southern Cross to one of those vets, the Grays were once again represented. Three vollies were delivered by 7 men, and crisp vollies they were. Two of the men firing were exzperienced in this execution, and their instruction and assistance to the other five made the difference. The vollies sounded as though they were from long-practicing veterans.

After the last volley, 2nd Color Sgt. Furlow came forward, and loaded and fired his personal salute to the veteran we honred that day. He then led the assembly in prayer for the brave and honorable soul whom we honored that day. Several of those who witnessed the ceremony expressed that they were greatly impressed with our effort.

That weekend, gentlemen, found the Grays represented, and praised, in the execution of their duty to Honor and Serve. In both ceremonies we were mentioned and represented, and, most importantly, executed our duty to the appreciation of the descendants of those valiant boys in gray.

Respectfully, Your Obedient Servant,

Preston T. Furlow
