Subject: Tundra Dedication

On an overcast and rainy Sunday last, the Order of Confederate Gray met to honor one William P. Watson of the 7th Alabama Infantry in a little cemetary south of Canton. The Cool Springs Cemetary with a small one room "Primitave Baptist Church" was the setting for a formal dedication of the marker that commemorated Pvt Watsons' service and life for a cause that he believed in. The day couldn't have been much worse, but the attendance was extraordinary. Besides the troops and members of the OCG, there were approximately 40 people that braved the rain, wind and bitter cold to help honor this man and 9 other veterans in the surrounding area. The roll call was read and the troops answered for the veterans that gave their all in defense of their cause. There were 16 rifles in the ranks, two color guards, 3 officers and NCO's along with the Chaplin.
The most awesome thing that happened was the prayer that ws said before anybody got there given by our chaplin asking for the rain to let up a little for the ceremony. Not only did the rain let up, it STOPPED. I guess the good Lord felt a little sorry for us standing in the rain like that and saw fit to bless us a little. For that, I am deeply moved and grateful. The service went well with the new commanding officer in place and considering that there were 8 soldiers that came from the area (some re-enactors, some SCV) to fall in with us. The mounted unit had to put the horses back in the trailers because of the cold and rain, only to have the rain stop. It was still cold, but as I said to the troops, you've been colder and wetter before, and besides these veterans hadit a lot rougher than we have it now. At least we get to take the uniform off and go home to a hot meal and warm bed.
Thanks to all who made this event a success and thaks to the UDC for supporting us in our effort to honor the veterans in North and East Texas.
YOS HONOR AND SERVE
Sgt Dan Hastings
