I've looked into this topic quite a bit and I've never heard of the picnic table idea but it sounds like a good one except you need a picnic table in the right place.
The two things that I can tell you for sure is that you must use food as an attractant. Cracked corn works well there is also a product called Buck Grub that deer love I mix this with the corn. I also have heard that day old bread and pasteries from a bakery draw deer like crazy. One problem to the feeding approach is that during the winter your corn will go fast, I had two hundred pounds disapear in less than two days.
The other thing is to avoid any contraption that a buck or doe could become caught in i.e. wire - don't use this. There is a line of shed collecting devices made by a company in Montana that look pretty good. In the end though nothing replaces shoe leather and the thrill of going out and finding them, plus buying and lugging around all that corn is a hassle.
