Subject: Invictus by W E Henley (listen online)

Belief in yourself not to be beaten by adversity and the fear of dieing and the uncertainties of what its like when the lights of life realy go out is surely what this great anthem to stoicism is all about. True courage and a fearlesness of the unknown and an indifference to all the theological conjecture about a God presiding like an omnipotent.father over us all and in the place of blind faith there can be a resignation to "What will be, Wil be" is surely the philosophical proposition behind this great poem.

Heres the link to the page where you can listen online to this and many other classic poems set to music...

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
