Hi Kay, my shar-pei does have a chewing problem also, at first i thought it was a teething thing and he would grow out of it but he is 2 years old now and is still doing it.
I have a lovely hole in my car seat, lost a few pairs of shoes and am on to his 4th dog bowl. I have come to the conclusion that it has turned into a bad habit. My only advice, give him something else to chew like a bone or a doggy toy, and save your poor shoes.
Good Luck
