Melancholy Waters

When love’s experience has torn apart your heart,
what should you do with the shattered pieces?

When sometimes all my words come out as tears
perhaps I will come to understand with time.

To truly love, is to love forever, for me anyway
even though that love may now be unrequited.

Now your eyes refuse to meet my hopeful gaze
my warm embrace rejected with such distaste.

Have we but come to this too sorry state
that we can no more speak or love again?

How can I follow friend’s well-meant advice
forget my love for you and times we shared?

Do not rape my mind of treasured memories
like my too soon vacated womb.

My life a series of bittersweet recollections
surviving a purgatory of tortured pleasure.

Leave my precious memories of you intact
your breath upon my face, your gentle kiss.

Do not ask me to move on, when cutting
my ties would condemn me to sorrow eternal.

Just leave me be in my happy misery
but perhaps forget me not quite so soon.

Let the salt encrusted tears trickle down
from the melancholy waters of my mind.
