Hello from London! I have been here a little over a week and am, of course, loving it.
I got in last Saturday morning was was VERY jetlagged. I didn't sleep on the plane at all. So I spent a lot of Saturday following Dave around Picadilly and whining. I don't think he enjoyed that very much.
Sunday we went to the Hyde Park ward. (Yes, they still have the visitors class. And it didn't bother me all that much this time--in fact, I think it's a very good idea. But that's because I now live in a ward in New York that gets bombarded with visitors, and I can understand.) Church was fun because friends of ours from New York are in London for a year and we got to see them. After Church we had a little picnic in Kensington Gardens. I walked by our flat, which is not nearly as fun knowing you guys are not there.#
On Monday I explored the City, walking from Charing Cross to St. Paul's (we live right by St. Pauls). On Tuesday I took a trip up to a little town called Chester. It is in the northwest, by Wales. It was founded during the Roman occupation and is still has a medieval wall surrounding the center of town that you can walk on. It was fun.
Wednesday I explored some more on foot, because there was a TUBE STRIKE! Do you know that tube workers start off at like £55,000 a year? And teachers only make £19,000. Ridiculous. So my feet hurt, and they weren't helped by the fact that I climbed the Monument. (Chiska, I saw the Eiffel Tower! :)
On Thursday I went to the Museum of London, which I didn't go to last time. It was pretty good, with exhibits showing the history of London from before the Romans up until the present. Some neat interactive stuff.
Friday I went to Battle and saw the field where the Battle of Hastings was fought, along with the ruins of the Abbey that William the Conquerer built there. Then I went down to Hastings and saw the ruins of Hastings Castle. It was on the top of this cliff and it was sooo windy... It's been pretty cold the entire time I've been here. I guess I should have known, but I was hoping that it would warm up in JULY....
Dave and I went to Oxford yesterday. We saw the museum and parts of Christ Church College (including the dining hall where parts of 'Harry Potter' were filmed). We tried to eat at The Eagle and the Child pub, where C.S. Lewis and Tolkien used to hang out, but the wait for food was too long. (What IS it with pubs?)
Anyway. So that's an update. I wish you all were here. It's not nearly as fun to do stuff by yourself. Buy my family is coming on Tuesday for a week and a half, so I will have other people to sightsee with.
Love you all!
Jess
