I had to see it so that I could have a qualified opinion, right? I knew it would be terrible when I read the first and last paragraph review on screenit.com, which I am in agreement with.

1. It was dull
2. It was trying to please everyone--the Jane Austen fans (with the book references...which just didn't carry through very well) and the people who wanted to just go see a romance...and as a result it was neither very romantic/passionate or interesting...it was just dull. Like it was trying to walk the line.
3. I had absolutely no emotion invested in the characters--I wasn't moved when I should've been.
4. The only thing of value I got out of it was, "Gee, I'm glad I didn't live during that time period."

BUT--I kind of expected all of those things, so as I was watching the movie I decided to enjoy it for what it was. I still found myself restless.

I was not at all sold on her romantic counterpart--he was a shallow playboy, and I felt dissappointed that the writers didn't put more depth into his character. Jane Austen was such an excellent observer of people, I can't imagine her really falling in love with a man like him. Oh well.

All in all, I imagine the writers/producers thinking, "this is an instant formula for making money" because of all the Jane Austen fans of late.

Joe's aunt's book was made into a movie by Sony, and it was directed by "Memoirs of a Geisha" lady. Karen (Joe's aunt) had a hard time enjoying it, but she said she's critical because it was her book and to see someone else translate that onto screen is a hard thing. Her family (husband and kids) though liked it--they all saw a screening of it.

I wonder if the release date will be pushed back even more now because of this terrible movie and the likelyhood of people getting the two confused and assuming that "Jane Austen Bookclub" is the one with the terrible reviews. Originally it was suposed to be release this June, but then it got pushed back to this fall, and now I'm guessing it might get pushed back even more. They may even put it straight to video--I don't know.

I hope it turns out to be a good movie. If it is terrible, I'll feel sorry for Karen. But only a little bit, because she made a pretty penny when she sold the rights to Sony. ;-)
