Okay Kiersten (and everyone else), are you ready to discuss Serentity?

Before I start, I just have two notices about things that could impede my discussion/understanding of the movie:

1) I've been reading this book about teaching deeper reading skills, and the author gave the metaphor of reading as a baseball game. For example, some people understand baseball on a superficial level (ie, they see the hits, the pitches, etc), while more experienced viewers of the game see the more subtle stuff (ie, the secret signals the pitcher gives the cather and stuff). I am not a science fiction person, so I feel like I missed a lot of the subtle stuff in the movie that others would get.

2) I saw it last weekend in the midst of a tragedy. We were supposed to help our friends move last Friday, but they called us on Thursday night in the middle of their Utah-to-New-Jersey drive and said that their five-year-old daughter was in the hospital with a brain tumor and most likely wouldn't survive. So on Friday night when I didn't want to stay at home and think about little Stacy, we went to see the movie, and I zoned out a bit to think about her (we practically adopted her at Columbia). Right after we got home from the movie we found out that she had passed away.

Okay, so now that you know some of my background in viewing the flick, let's talk. One of the things I found most fascinating was the concept of Mr. Universe, who was able to broadcast information. It reminds me a lot of the media today--they sure like to talk a lot, but who knows what's true and what isn't. I tend to be cynical where the media is concerned, probably because I'm a conservative in the midst of liberals who think anything having to do with religion is crazy. It also reminded me a lot of 1984 (the novel, not the year), and how the Party uses language and the manipulation of history and information to control people. The thing that saved River and the whole crew of Serenity was their ability, their freedom to broadcast that information to the public. At the same time, that's what that government-agent guy (whose name, if he had one, totally escapes me) fought so hard to prevent from happening.

So what do you think?
