Last weekend Joe and I went to the Burns Dinner put on by the English Dept. Robert Burns lived around 1750-1800. He was from Scotland, and he wrote poetry that your familiar with ("My Love is like a red red rose"; Auld Lang Syne: "Should auld acquaintance be forgot"; and "the best laid plans o' mice and men often go awry"). This is probably stuff you all know, but I had forgotten and it was fun to make the connection again.

Anyway, it was cool! I was assigned to bring Tatties and Neeps (mashed potatoes and rutabegas mixed together). My first experience with a rutabega.

They had Scotish music, bagpips, etc. The dinner started with the "Piping in of the hagis" which is really funny to me. A man marches in with the haggis (scotish sausage made from sheep's stomach--do you guys remember trying this in Scottland?) held high on a plate, followed by a man playing the bagpipes. There's even an Ode to Hagis that is read, and then everyone toasts the hagis before they eat. I also ate cockaleekie soup, and no, it didn't have rocky mountain oysters in it, though it sounds like it would. ;-)

The rest of the night was accompanied by scotish music and Burns' poetry and food.

There was a "Toast to the lassies" and a "Toast to the laddies". It was great.

Joe and some other guys are having a moustace growing contest begining the day after Valentine's Day.

They got Brett McInnelly (sp?) to committ to it, and John Bennion. They're working on Lance Larsen to also join it. I think it is funny, but I'm not looking forward to the moustache.

And yes, neatly trimmed moustaces at the corners of the mouth are allowed in the honor code.
