My goodness, where do I start??
Em, I LOVE Anna Karenina. I've read it honestly like 5 times. I think I read it first in AP English (there's one suggestion for you, Jess) and then a couple more times in college--and I've written several papers about it. I haven't picked it up recently so I don't know if my tastes have changed, but I just found it to be the most thought-provoking, insightful book. So many life lessons that go beyond the basic story line. I am ashamed to say, however, that I have not read any other Tolstoy. I think I started War and Peace one summer but never got into it (Em, it didn't pass the "first 20 pages test").
About AP English books: I second all the suggestions made so far. I especially loved Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. I remember reading some Albert Camus (strange, strange French author). Right now I can't remember anything else, but I'll try to think some more . . .
About our house: we backed out of the house that had electrical wiring problems. It was hard to do because we liked it, but the repair would have been too expensive and it just didn't make sense. Unfortunately we spent almost $1,000 going through all the inspections just to get that information . . . . But there is a silver lining: a few days after we backed out, Ryan and I were totally bummed, tired of looking and ready to give up, but there was one house that had just been listed that I thought I'd check out before we gave up. I had an appointment to see it on a Saturday morning--I was the first person to see it--and I immediately called Ryan to come down and see it too. We really liked it, and submitted an offer at 1:30 that afternoon. The sellers received several more offers that day but they decided to accept our offer (we had offered $5,000 more than the asking price because we knew we'd be competing against other offers). Anyway, the inspection on this home is today so cross your fingers!! We actually like this home better than the one we backed out of, and yesterday we went to the ward and everyone there was so friendly and welcoming. So we really hope this one works out.
