Our good friend, Eric Samuelson, has a letter to the editor in the Deseret News today. I totally disagree with his position and don't understand his logic, but I guess that's just Eric.

Here it is:

Let's disagree respectfully
A recent letter to the editor (Needra Johnson, Readers' Forum, July 7) asserted that "no truly LDS person could vote for John Kerry." Such an attitude, which is unfortunately prominent in our culture, cannot be reconciled with the church's official position on political questions, which is nonpartisan. Some general authorities are Democrats and some are Republicans. I am a liberal Democrat and an active LDS high priest. Indeed, I am a liberal Democrat because I'm a Mormon and a Mormon because I'm a liberal Democrat. As a Christian, I believe society has an absolute moral obligation to care for the poor and stand up for the weak.
What of abortion or same-sex marriage? These important moral issues have been decided by a judicial decision. Since no legislative remedy suggests itself, these do not strike me as significant political issues. On every other important issue in this campaign, I find the Democratic position persuasive. Other members of the church may disagree. Please, let's disagree respectfully. Surely that's our Christian obligation.
