Well, the first day kind of stinks, because you have to do a lot of business stuff. Trust me, it gets a LOT better once you get to the content of the course and have actual things to talk about. And they're always scared on the first day. You could probably say "boo" to them and they'd jump.

Barring that, I'd call on them. Make sure they know that participation is a HUGE part of their grade (lie even if it's not :)) and call on them. Socratic method. Assign them to groups and make them present. What specific class are you teaching again?

Bottom line, don't worry. Once they have something to talk about, they'll talk. It's the nature of us English/theater people. And if they don't volunteer, pick randomly from the roster and act like you're writing things down as they answer. :)
