First off, I think you should capture differently at all possible. If you have a traditional capture card, just capture through Virtual Dub with the HUFYUV codec. This is a lossless codec and it will look identical to what you have on the tape (i.e. not crappier).

If you must use this device, I suggest MPEG-2 over MPEG-1...actually STRONGLY suggest for MPEG-2 since that is the standard for DVD. I also suggest a much higher bitrate. I generally encode my AMVs at 8 MB/s for my master file (for myself and CDs) and 12 MB/s for cons. This won't look perfect like the HUFYUV, but it'll still look pretty damn good.

Lastly, whether you're converting your HUFYUV file or MPEG-2, I suggest using the XviD codec instead of DivX. Namely XviD with DivX 4 support clicked-on. This means anyone with the DivX codec can still view your XviD and more importantly, you get to have all the advantages of XviD which are (IMO) better quality and smaller file-sizes.

In fact, there is an option in XviD (video compression -> options, I think Doug probably knows what I'm talking about) where you can specify a general quality setting and what size you want the file to be (relatively). I believe the algorithm is smart enough to know where to encode at a higher bitrate and that's why it can take in such a constraint (although it must be reasonable).

If all goes well, you *might* be able to make each episode 150 megs with *decent* quality. This would let you put 4 on a CD.

Now that I think about it, you should be fine this way since I've made 4 - 5 minute AMVs about 35 MB before (although I prefer higher) and 4 - 5 * 5 equals an anime episode.

Hope that helps!
