My own personal justification for fansubbing is simple enough. I can get things more than a year before the domestic release, subtitled, in English. I can get them sometimes immediately following their air date. I can also get the first few episodes of a series and try it out--ethically there's no difference between that and borrowing/renting a copy, so long as I buy it if it's something I'd want.

I realize, though, that to most people "fansub" means "free". That's just not the way it's supposed to work--heck, I would go over to Rentertainment, rent stacks of 20 or so VHS tapes, and add to my own personal collection, just because I was broke...doesn't mean I'm not meticulously going through my collection and buying the DVD's, now that I'm not broke. To do otherwise would be unethical...but sadly many don't seem to have a problem with that.
