Well, right now they sort of have to, since anime is still a niche thing. But it is getting much more popular everyday ...

Maybe, maybe not. As a counter example, I could point to Disney, Funimation, and DiC as companies that (well, not in all cases) set their eyes on the general public rather then the hardcore fans (Funimation with DBZ, DiC with Sailormoon, and Disney with the Miyazaki stuff). DBZ and Sailormoon were not targetted towards the hardcore fans and Disney's releases of Miyazaki are good, but there have been a decent amount of grumbling about certain things. I suppose the same is true for Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon - have there ever been uncut subtitled versions of these shows released in the US? (I actually don't know as I don't ususally pay attention to these things...) Anyway, but in the end I agree that the smaller companies cannot afford to lose the support of the hardcore fans. The bigger companies have larger fish to fry, though ...
