This is a valid point. Given of course that I'm a business...well, if I had to make that call I'd say "Go with Pokemon, so we can afford to do the artsy stuff...that artsy stuff is cool :)"

While pleasing the hardcore fans might not be THE highest priority, I think most companies at least care a little.

Aside from that, there is one other factor: companies alienate hardcore fans at their peril. Hardcore fans make the most noise, and they care the most so they carry grudges. See Manga, who is almost universally reviled...and note that even though they have a LOT of big name movies, they really aren't all that big overall.
