Shonen ai has a very specific target market. For a good idea of what this market is, see the myriad Gundam Wing yaoi fanfics floating aroud the 'net. Further, this market is not being very well tapped at present. So that's different.

Hikaru no Go isn't _weird_, per se. It's more _Japanese_ than weird, in that Go is very obscure in the States. Prior to watching some HnG episodes the only thing I knew about Go was that it was widely regarded in AI circles as "absolutely impossible" because the branching factor was so large. I don't think I'm all that unusual in regards to not knowing too much about Go. It's sort of like why you don't see many soccer movies where a guy has to overcome inner demons and a disability to become a superstar; in the States those kinds of films are _baseball_ movies, not soccer.
