Prologue: The Boy Behind The Mask

*************************

“Terri you look beautiful!”

“Hi Whit! Thank you. I’m so nervous.” Theresa said looking around the gym room.

“Nervous? How come?” Whitney looked at her friend who came to the party as a belly dancer.

“Because I have two left feet.”

Theresa stared down at her feet while grabbing her friend’s hands.

“Promise me Whitney Russell. You promise me that if a boy asks me to dance that you will rescue me somehow.”

Whitney looked around the gym room wondering who were behind the masks.

“What can I do Terri?”

“I don’t know, something. Come grab me and let’s have a girl moment. Something! I just don’t think I can get through this dance. Why did my mother make me come to this?” Theresa folded her arms and frowned.

“She made you come for the same reason as my mom made me come, not to mention all the other seventh and eighth grade girls and boys. They don’t want us to be social outcasts I guess.”

Whitney looked over at the boy standing by the punch bowl. “Oooh, I wonder if that’s Joshua under that batman mask. Hey! Maybe that’s Michael over there.” Whitney was so excited to be at the party she couldn’t help dragging Theresa right along with her.

“Come on Terri, let’s go see what the DJ will be playing tonight.”

She pulled her friend across the gymnasium in hopes of making her forget how nervous she was about being there.

****************************

“All right young people, a special song is about to be played, so everyone find a partner.

All the boys ran to a girl and pulled her to the dance floor.

The Only girl who stood along the wall was Terri. She had been so nervous about dancing, that she avoided the dance floor all night.

Her friend however danced with almost every boy in the place. That is except the boy with the Ronald Regan mask on. No one really knew who he was, or why he was there. It was obvious that this was the last place he wanted to be.

When the music began, all the girls were coupled with a dance partner except Theresa. She felt relieved yet sad at the same time.

All of a sudden she noticed the young boy walking over to her. She wanted to dash out of picking ranged, but her feet suddenly became glued to the floor.

“Hi, would you like to dance?”

“Well, I’m not that good of a dancer, so maybe you should pick someone else.”

“Oh that’s perfect!” He said. “I’m not that good either, so I won’t be nervous with you.”

The boy grabbed her hand and pulled her to the dance floor. She, being nervous at first, held on to his hands, and sort of rocked from side to side. She noticed all the other girls laying their heads on their partner’s shoulders, so she decided to do the same.

The most amazing thing happened after that. It was like a lost puzzle piece finally being matched with its mate.

“Perfect fit” Theresa whispered to herself.

“Yes, perfect.” The little boy said whispering as well.

Neither Theresa, nor the little boy stepped on each other’s feet, and they obvious were the best dancers in the gym room that night. Everyone had stopped to watch the cute couple dance as the words across the room played, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.”

*****************************

That night after Theresa was in bed, she thought about the boy and who he might have been. She was abruptly pulled away from the dance before he took off his mask.

Right before the dance ended, Theresa’s father came to pick her up because one of her brothers had been in a car accident, and was rushed to the hospital.

She felt horrible knowing that she might not ever find out who the little boy was. But for some strange reason, she’ll always remember that special dance with the boy behind the mask.
