"It is so good to be back home isn't it Whit?" Theresa said to her best friend for the last 20 years.

"It sure is. I can't wait to see my mom and dad. I'm not sure if Simone is coming home this year. She really wants to finish school sooner than possible, so she's taking a couple of extra courses this summer."

"Good for her. Before we go home, let's head down to the Book Café. I heard some really cute hottie is running it now."

"That sounds great Terri. Let's go. Hey you know I heard Ethan Crane is in town for good."

"Who?" Theresa asked.

"Ethan Crane. The oldest son of Ivy and Julian Crane. The richest people in Harmony."

"Oh him. Well we probably wouldn't see him no way if he's the heir to all that fortune."

"Nall, I guess not. Rich folk don't fratinize with us commoners."

“But it would be great if a man like Ethan Crane would take one look at one of us and fall madly in love.”

“Stop dreaming Terri. That only happens in the movies, not real life.”

“I guess you’re right. Besides, I don’t think I could be civil to any man right now with the way my relationship with Steven ended. I don’t think I could even think about being in another relationship right now. All men are total jerks. And I have Steven to thank for that.”

“I’m sure there is a man out there that don’t think with his penis. You’ll find true love, as will I. Who knows? He could be waiting at the Book Café as we speak.”

The girls laughed and headed toward the Book Café.

***********************************

"What's up Chad?" Ethan said shaking his hand.

"Ethan! What's up brother. I haven't seen you down here in a while."

"I've been busy. I started at this new law firm last month. My family is still tripping because I refuse to work as the family's attorney. But I'm sure they'll get over it."

"I heard that my man. Ethan Crane, still doing his own thing."

"So Chad what's up with you and Val."

"Val? You have been gone long. I'm seeing Trish now, because things didn't work out between me and Tiffany, or me and Katrina, or me and....."

"My goodness Chad, how many women do you have?"

"It's not what you think Ethan. I'm just not ready to settle down. I haven't met that special someone. You know! The one that when you see her, your head starts to swirl, and your stomach feel all queasy, and it leaves you totally speechless."

“Well, I guess I haven’t found her either. The women I seem to hook up with only want a part of the Crane fortune or sex.”

Chad laughed. “Well the sex part is not all that bad.”

“Chad come on. You can’t tell me that you haven’t thought about having someone special in your life. Someone to share your life with and have it not only be about the physical side of it.”

“Sometimes I do get tired of dating two, sometimes three different women every week. But it just hasn’t happened yet. Hey! Wouldn’t it be nice if the two women we are destined to be with walked in right at this very moment?”

“Yeah right Chad. That kind of luck only happens in the movies.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Chad sighed turning to put on some music.

As Theresa and Whitney entered the Book Café, Ethan couldn't believe the girl who was coming in the door. The one with the creamy light skin, and the long deep auburn hair. And those beautiful brown eyes. She was absolutely breath taken. When he saw her brush her hair back out of her face with her hand and smiled, he immediately went weak in the knees.

The two girls walked pass him without notice, and found a table at the back of the Café. They were so engross with conversation that they didn't notice Ethan staring at Theresa.

"Who are they?" He asked Chad. “I’ve never seen them here before.”

"I'm not really sure. The brown skin girl looks like Whitney Russell though."

"Whitney Russell?'

"Yeah, Whitney Russell the tennis pro."

"Oh yeah, now I recognize her from her photographs. Who's her friend."

"I've never seen her before. But I do remember my friend Miguel saying that he had an older sister who was friends with Whitney. She's been away at school. She looks like she may fit that description."

"You mean Pilar's son Miguel?"

"Yeah."

"I do remember her saying she had a daughter around my age. She tried to fix us up about three years ago, but I weaseled out. I hate blind dates. What's her name?"

"I believe he said her name was Theresa and that they call her Terri for short."

"Hmm! Theresa."

At that moment Theresa walked up to the counter to order her and Whitney two Cappuccinos.

"Excuse me." She said to Chad. "I would like to order two Cappuccinos."

"Coming right up." Chad said turning to get the coffees.

Ethan couldn’t catch himself fast enough before Theresa caught him staring.

“Is there a problem sir?” She said rather nastily.

“Um, no. I was just wondering why I have never seen you before.”

Theresa stared at him for a moment not knowing what to say. She turned and faced Chad to ignore the guy who had the nerve to speak to her.

Ethan didn’t know what else to say, so he did the only thing he thought was right.

"Chad, please put the ladies coffees on my bill." Ethan said smiling at her.

Theresa looked at him sharply.

"Are you suggesting that I can't pay for two coffees?"

"Oh, no. I just thought I would be neighborly."

"Well don't bother. I pay my own bills, and I definitely don't need anyone doing it for me."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you."

"Yeah, well, whatever. Chad, is it?" Theresa said looking at the guy behind the counter.

"Yes, would you like something else?"

"No thank you. My friend and I are sitting in the back when the coffees are ready." She gave Ethan another sharp look and turned on her heels and headed back to Whitney.

"Man! She's a pistol. But she's cute. I could go for someone like that."

"I don't know Ethan. She seems way out of your league."

"What do you mean Chad?"

"Nothing, I shouldn't say."

"No tell me what you meant by that comment."

"I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you're sort of a stuff neck, and she's kind of feisty. If you ask me the two don't mix."

"A stuff neck! Am I really a stuff neck?"

Chad laughed.

"You may be a stuff neck Ethan, but you're still cool."

"Thanks a lot, I think. Hey! Let me take the coffees over to the girls. I guess I didn't make a good impression. Maybe I can salvage my personality."

"Maybe that's not such a good idea man. Not unless you want those coffees on your head."

"Stop being so dramatic Chad."

*****************************************

"Theresa, who's the guy at the counter?"

"I don't know. Some jerk. He wanted to buy the coffees. I hate guys who try and buy the drinks sitting at the counter. They can't come up with a good pick up line so they offer to buy the drinks."

"I think he's kind of cute. And it was nice for him to offer. You have to remember Terri we're not at some bar in New York City. This is Harmony. The guys here are harmless. And this is a book cafe. I don't think guys come here to pick up girls. However the guy behind the counter is hot! I wouldn’t mind him picking me up."

“Well, well, well. The passion just seems to flow through you, my little friend.”

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been with a man. School is way too demanding. But this is the summer. It’s time to have a little fun. Maybe you and cutie up there could do something about your foul mood.”

"Whatever! He looks like those rich types who think the world revolves around them. I don't have time for it. Especially after Steven. What a jerk he turned out to be. I just want to meet a nice guy that I could laugh with. A guy who will be honest with his feelings. We have one more year at school, and then we're on our own. I don't want to be one of those girls who go home to her cat every night with no one to love."

"Terri you're not going to be like that. Look at you. You are a wonderful person. Not to mention beautiful. Any guy would be lucky to spend his time with you."

"Thanks Whit. You always know the right things to say."

"Well don't look now, the guy from the counter is heading this way."

"Great." Theresa said with a frown.

"Excuse me ladies. Here are the coffees you ordered."

"Thank you." Whitney responded. Theresa didn't say anything.

"Well I wanted to apologize again for the incident at the counter." Ethan said looking at Theresa.

Theresa was still silent. Whitney jumped in so that her friend's rudeness wasn't noticed.

"I'm sure there wasn't any harm done. Hi, I'm Whitney Russell." She said reaching out a hand to Ethan.

"It's nice to meet you Whitney, I'm Ethan. Ethan Crane."

Theresa nearly choked on her coffee.

"It's nice to meet you Mr. Crane."

"Please, it's Ethan."

"Ethan, this is my friend Terri."

Ethan reached out his hand at Theresa as she turned and faced him.

"It's Theresa!" She said firmly, and turned back in her seat.

Ethan put his hand in his pocket after she refused to shake it.

"Well, it was nice meeting you ladies. Maybe we'll meet again."

"Not too soon I hope." Theresa said under her breath.

"It was nice meeting you too Ethan!" Whitney blurted out to speak over Theresa's comment.

After Ethan walked away, Whitney let her friend have it.

"Why were you so rude Theresa?"

"Me, rude. I wasn't rude was I." She said with a wicked smile.

"Terri, I don't know what I'm going to do with you."

"What!" Theresa said sipping you drink.

************************************

Ethan walked back up to the counter.

"Wow, Ethan. You survived without being drenched in coffee."

"Funny Chad. Very funny."

"What!"

"I think you're right. That girl is cold and rude. Damn and what an attitude. She probably couldn't keep a man if her life depended on it. Maybe I am lucky that I 'm not in her league. I wouldn't want to be."

Ethan turned around and found Theresa standing directly behind him. She didn't say a word, but he could tell that his comments bothered her. Her eyes were exquisite, and they spoke louder than words. Ethan couldn't quite get the words out to apologize, but Theresa acted like she didn't here him and walked pass him to the counter.

"How much is my bill Chad?" She said, her voice trembling.

"Um, $3.50."

Theresa handed him her money and walked passed Ethan without looking at him.

"Why didn't you tell me she was standing there?"

"I didn't see her. She's has a very small figure."

"That's O.K. I think I hurt her feelings."

"Why do you care. You were just saying how rude she was."

"I know, but it's something about her eyes that tells me that it's all a front."

"Whatever man."

"I'm going to keep my eye on her, and figure her out. If she's Pilar and Martin's daughter, she can't be all that bad."

The girls walked pass them and headed out the door. Whitney smiled at Ethan and Theresa kept her face forward not wanting him to see that his comment was upsetting.

"Yeah, I'm going to definitely keep my eye on her. I think she could be something special."

"Hey Ethan, Trish and I are going to the show tonight. She has a friend. Would you like to come?"

"Is this your way of telling me that I shouldn't pursue the pretty Theresa?"

"No, this is my way of getting you to come out with us so Trish's friend wouldn't be a third wheel."

"Oh no! No thank you. I hate blind dates."

"I've seen her Ethan. She's not all that bad. Once you get pass the glasses and the baggy clothes. She's quite charming."

"Yeah right Chad. I know your idea of charming."

"What!"

"Sorry buddy, I'll have to pass this time. Besides I'm busy tonight."

"Right. I'll bet."

"See you later Chad."

And he walked out of the Book Café in a hot pursuit.
