20 Year Old Youth Loses to Incumbent In N.J. Mayoral Race
Tommy Avallone, vows he may try again

Haddon Heights, N.J. - 20 year old film maker and Skate Board enthusiast Tommy Avallone had a lot of gusto when he took on the incumbent mayor of Haddon Heights. He vowed to pay for skate parks and recreation for young people with "hard core Punk-ska concerts". That dream won't be a reality-at least not in 2004. But young Avallone has "hutzpah" and he's not out yet-according to him.

If nothing else the 20 year old with his eclectic campaign, promoting his two independent films while campaigning has gotten recognition. Isn't that what politics is all about? Name recognition landed a lot of people in the positions they're in today. Just ask Arnold what's-his-name. Or....George..."dub-ya".

Back in early October, young Tommy Avallone stood on the steps of the Haddon Heights Court House and declared himself an "Independent' candidate for the mayoral seat of the New Jersey borough. He faced the 48 year old incumbent Republican Susan Griffith and 50 year old businessman (Democrat) Bill Kenney.

Kenney applauds Avallone's desire, saying he was just 23 years old when he won his first political victory. Kenney was elected to the School Board. This is his second run for mayor, an attorney and president of the business association, Kenney still couldn't garner enough support to defeat Griffith. Kenney didn't say if he intends on a third run for the office. Avallone on the other hand says "If I feel the same way [as I did] I might run again in four years".

For the record, Griffith won her first term in an election to fill an unexpired term. Kenney was her only challenger. This time in a three way race she won by a slim majority. So, advocates of Tommy Avallone say he accomplished something-he stopped Susan Griffith from winning by a larger majority and he kept votes away from challenger Kenney. For a 21 year old he has sharp sense of how the game is played.

The GOP did lose control of the Borough council in Haddon Heights, while retaining mayor Griffith. And Tommy Avallone was a part of that. That has to say something about this young man's fabric, and it has to say something to the Republican party. This was their second loss of power in New Jersey. While the 4th senate district is still being fought-in the courts, the GOP has lost that seat in the house.

"It's a referendum on the White House" said one observer. Only time will tell if Avallone will get his big break in politics, or if he'll a famous movie mogul. Keep your eyes open for more from this young mind.
