Angsty but with a happy ending. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- She watched from the window as the plane slowly took off. Tears were streaming down her face before the plane even left the ground. No one knew she was here. He hadn't wanted any of them to accompany him to the airport and they had all agreed. But she wasn't going to just let him leave without watching him go. "Good-bye, Giles" Buffy whispered as his plane flew out of sight. "Where've you been Buffy?" Willow asked when Buffy got back home. "I just went out for a walk" she replied. She had stopped in the airport bathroom to clean herself up before she got home. The others would know she was upset about Giles leaving but they wouldn't understand why she was so upset. He was the only one that had made her feel alive. But she hadn't known how to deal with it and had put everything on him. It hadn't been fair and he had told her that he had to leave so she would take responsibility for herself and Dawn. Now she was falling apart. Giles was the one person she thought would always be there and now he was gone and she didn't know how to deal. Willow was looking at Buffy trying to figure out what was going on with her friend. "Are you okay Buffy?" Willow asked concerned. "I'm just tired, Will. I think I'm just going to go to bed now." And she went upstairs and curled up on her bed in a ball. Willow watched her leave knowing Giles' departure must have upset her more than she was letting on. Willow hadn't had the heart to tell Buffy that it was only 5:00. Oh, well, Willow thought. The sleep will probably do her some good. But Buffy wasn't sleeping. Instead she was thinking. I should have just told him I loved him. But would he have believed me? I almost don't believe me but it's true. When they brought me back and I realized I wasn't in Hell all I could think of was Giles and how I couldn't do this without Giles. How I couldn't have done anything I've done without Giles. But now I'll never get the chance to tell him. Buffy had gotten up from her bed and had started pacing around her room very agitated. Why is it that I always drive the men I love away? Her brain was on overload and she just couldn't deal with any of it anymore and she just flopped down on her bed and fell asleep. One Week Later Buffy was out on patrol and Xander, Anya, Willow, and Tara were sitting around the house discussing Buffy's behavior over the past week. "Will, I'm starting to get really worried about Buffy," Xander said. "She's practically acting the same way as when she first came back." "I know Xand," Willow replied. "She only eats when you put food in front of her and even then she only sort of picks at it. Plus she isn't sleeping well. The nightmares are coming back and they sound worse than last time." "Well I think we should call, Giles," Anya said. "I mean it's obviously his fault." "An," Xander said. "It's not Giles' fault." "Of course it is," Anya replied. "If he were here he would take care of her and then everything would be fine." "That's why he left though," came Tara's quiet voice. "He was doing everything for her. We all feel bad for Buffy because of what's happened but there's nothing we can do to reverse it so Buffy is going to have to come to terms with living again and she won't do it if Giles is here to do it all for her." "Well…" Anya started but just then Buffy walked in the door. She had only being taking quick sweeps during patrol lately. She didn't really care and just wanted to get it over with so she could go home. Not that home was much better what with everyone worrying over her. And it's not like she could sleep. Sleep just brought the nightmares but it was better than being out there where everything just seemed to remind her of Giles. "Hey, everybody," she said. "What's going on?" "Well…" Anya started but this time before she could get any farther Xander had clamped his hand over her mouth. "Well," he said. "It's late we should be going. See you guys later." Then he half dragged Anya out the door before she could open her mouth again. "Ok. That was weird even for them," Buffy said. "Oh, well. See you guys tomorrow." She went to go up the stairs. Willow and Tara exchanged worried glances. The old Buffy would have wanted to know why they were acting weird but this one just didn't care. Just as Buffy reached the stairs though the phone rang. Buffy sighed and went to answer it. "Hello," she answered wearily. "Buffy?" The person asked. "Giles?!" Buffy asked hopefully. "Yes it's me," Giles answered. "Are you all right?" "I'm fine. I just wasn't expecting to hear from you." "Well I left last week and I thought it would be good if we made a time each week where I could call and we could talk." "Really?" Buffy asked. "Of course, Buffy," Giles replied. "Just because I'm not there doesn't mean I can't keep in touch and give you some advice if you need it. If that's all right with you that is?" "That's fine." Buffy replied. "Is now a good time to call you?" Giles asked. "I realize it's 12 there but that makes it 4 here and I know you're usually on patrol anyway so I didn't think it would be a bad time but I can call earlier if you'd like?" "No. 12 is good," Buffy said. They talked for a little while longer before hanging up. Willow and Tara who had been sitting there during the phone conversation saw who animated Buffy's face had gotten just while talking to Giles and they smiled to each other. Buffy hung up the phone and headed upstairs where she immediately fell asleep and for the first night in a week she didn't have a single nightmare. The next day Buffy woke up and actually felt rested. He called! I can't believe he called! Maybe there's still hope. Maybe if I can prove to him that I can take care of Dawn and myself he'll come back. He has to come back. And with that she got out of bed and was determined to start the day right. She went and brought in the morning paper and opened to the Employment Section and started looking for a job. When it got close to ten and she still hadn't really found a job she was qualified for she decided to start breakfast. When she was done she put two plates on a tray and brought it upstairs and knocked on Willow and Tara's door. "Come in," a sleepy voice said. Buffy opened the door and brought the tray to the two of them in bed. "Hey, Buffy. What's with the breakfast in bed?" Willow asked. "I just wanted to do something nice for my friends," Buffy explained. "I know I haven't been the greatest friend since I got…back, but I'm going to try and do better from now on." "Thank you, Buffy," Tara said. "This was really nice of you." "Your welcome you guys. I just have one favor to ask," Buffy said. "I knew there had to be a catch," Willow said jokingly. "Could you guys just stay up here while I have a talk with Dawn?" Buffy asked. "Sure, Buffy," Tara replied. "Not a problem." With that Buffy went back downstairs to breakfast together for her and Dawn. After she left Willow and Tara looked at each other and smiled again. This was the Buffy they had all missed. They just hoped she was here to stay. When Dawn came down to the kitchen a few minutes later she was surprised to find both her sister and breakfast waiting for her. "What's up, Buff?" Dawn asked. "We need to have a talk, Dawn," Buffy answered seriously. "I know I haven't been the greatest sister lately and I'm sorry. It hasn't been fair to you. I mean first you lost mom and then me and then when you finally think you have me back I'm not really there. I still have some stuff to work through but I know I also have to be there for you. I just want you to know that I love you very much and it's not that I haven't wanted to be with you it's just hard after what I've been through but I want you to know that I'm going to try and be a lot better, ok?" "Really?" Dawn asked hopefully. "You bet, munchkin." Dawn squealed and threw herself at her sister who caught her in a big hug. Reluctantly they both let go. "That's not all," Buffy continued. "What else is there?" Dawn asked. "Your behavior," Buffy replied. "I realize you did a lot of it because you felt like you were being ignored and I can understand it but I'm hoping after our talk it will improve. You have to understand that there are still times when you might feel like you're being ignored but it's not because any of us don't love you it's just that we all get busy sometimes. If you're feeling like that you just have to let us know and we'll try to fix it. Also know if you do keep misbehaving I will ground you. We have to make this work and that's going to take some work on both our parts." "Ok, ok," Dawn replied. "I get it. Can I eat know?" "Yes you can eat. Hurry up because Xander and Anya will be over in a little while. Hopefully I`ll have found some good jobs by then." Dawn chowed down on her breakfast while Buffy continued looking through the paper. About an hour later Xander and Anya did indeed show up and were happily surprised to be greeted by a happy Buffy. As soon as they were in the door Buffy asked, "Xander do you think you could do me a big favor?" "What, Buff?" He replied, eager to keep the smile on his friends face. "I have an interview at 3. Think you could give me a ride?" Buffy asked hopefully. "That's great, Buff. Sure I can give you a ride. Where is it?" "At that new gym on Main Street. They want to start a self- defense course and they're looking for an instructor and I figured that's something I'd be good at," Buffy answered. "Sounds right up your alley," Xander said and gave his friend a big hug. A few hours later they were on their way. Willow was pacing around the living room only stopping to look out the window every time a car drove by. "Where are they? It's been almost two hours," she said anxiously. "Calm down," her girlfriend said. "I'm sure she'll get the job." They all went back to sitting in silence except for Willow who continued her pacing. Suddenly they heard a car pull into the driveway. Willow bolted to the door and threw it open just as Xander and Buffy reached it. "Did you get it? Did you get it?" she cried bouncing up and down. Buffy managing to move Willow aside so she and Xander could get in the door asked, "Have you guys been giving her caffeine?" "I'm sorry," the redheaded witch said. "I just want to know if you got the job or not." "I did," Buffy replied with a huge smile. Suddenly, Willow and Dawn attacked her from both sides. "Congratulations," Tara said from her spot on the couch. "I'm glad you will be getting to make lots of money now," Anya said, "Now you just need an orgasm friend like Xander. But you can`t have Xander." Xander just hung his head in embarrassment. Buffy choosing to just ignore Anya's comment said, "Thanks guys. I better go start dinner. You're all welcome to stay." And so they did. They had a large festive supper toasting to Buffy's new job. The whole week went by and everyone was much happier. Buffy enjoyed her job and was able to be home in time to make dinner on her nights since she, Willow, and Tara all took turns. She spent quality time with Dawn who had been on her best behavior all week and had even brought home notes from her teachers telling Buffy of her improvement in school. Buffy had gone back to her regular route for patrolling and only cut it short one night. Saturday night. She made sure she was home in plenty of time for Giles' call. Everyone else had gone to bed and she was pacing the living room counting the minutes until 12. At exactly midnight the phone rang. Before the first ring had even finished she had picked up the phone. "Hi, Giles!" she said happily. "Hello, Buffy," he replied. "You sound very well tonight. Any special reason?" "I just had a very good week," she answered and proceeded to tell him about her new job and her talk with Dawn and how much better Dawn was doing. She also told him how her friends were doing and how here patrols were going. "That's excellent, Buffy. I'm so proud of you," Giles told her. Buffy thought her heart would explode. This is great! He's proud of me. He sees that I can put my life together and take care of everything. Now he'll have to come back. They talked for about an hour before hanging up. Buffy fell asleep that night with a huge smile on her face. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Replies:
