>Chapter 4<
The Unexpected Surprise
Sirius stared out of his bedroom window the next morning. It was 7am and his birthday.
He wasn’t looking forward to it somehow. His mum had deliberately invited almost the whole street over for his birthday party. He didn’t want a load of strangers coming round.
He could hear his mum getting up and scuffling around for his presents, which she hid under the bed.
In a minute she’d be tiptoeing down the stairs and placing his wrapped presents in the lounge then she’d go in the kitchen and start cooking a full English breakfast. Sirius almost laughed. His mum was that predictable.
He was still staring out of his window and he couldn’t but help notice that there were two owls flying towards him from the distance. It was early in the morning, and Sirius was sure that these kinds of birds were only supposed to come out at night.
Then one of the owls swooped to the right and disappeared from sight and the other headed straight for his bedroom window.
Sirius stared with his jaw practically hanging open. This owl looked as though it was a barn owl. He could tell because of its brownish colour.
Sirius suddenly remembered the owl from last night. He wasn’t really sure why, but he had a feeling that the owl from last night had something to do with that “sorry” note.
He stepped back from the window, as the barn owl got closer. It whooshed through the window, and Sirius put it arms over his head as the barn owl flew around the room twice (feathers flying everywhere) and dropped a letter on his bed (Sirius didn’t notice this has he had his arms over his head.)
The barn owl then flew out, and Sirius immediately rushed towards the window and closed it quickly before anymore owls fly in and shed feathers all over his room.
A strong wind blew in as Sirius closed the window and this breeze caused the unseen letter on his bed to flutter over his bedsheets and disappear down the side alongside the wall.
“Bloody owl.” Muttered Sirius staring at the mess of feathers all over his floor.
He bent down and started picking up the feathers around him until he came across a piece of ripped parchment (that must of got teared off the envelope by accident by the owl). He noticed it was that same yellowy kind and he became suspicious. On the ripped piece was what looked like an emblem; a big capital H surrounded by an eagle, snake, badger and lion.
Sirius stared out the window again where he saw a barn owl swoop out of next doors window.
So that’s who’s been sending me junk. James. I bet he thinks he’s being really funny. Thought Sirius stuffing the ripped parchment into his jean pocket. I think I’ll pay him a visit and show him for sending bleeding owls in my room.

Remus was given two letters this morning, when he woke up. And so had Peter (well only one letter) as he saw the short boy rushing over towards his flat.
One letter was from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (which Peter had as well) and the other was from Snape.
Lupin
Meet me in the Leaky Cauldron at 7:15. Bring you little rat friend as well. I have a surprise for you that cannot wait.
Be prompt or you’ll be hoping for a death wish.
S. Snape
Remus didn’t like the sound of this, nor did Peter when he had read it.
Remus’ first thought was to ignore it and not go, but then Peter argued that Snape might do something terrible if he didn’t go.
“Peter,” Said Remus. “If I do go he’ll probably do something terrible to me anyway.”
“Look at it this way.” Answered Peter. “He’s either going to definitely do something terrible or probably do something terrible. I’d go with probably.”
“Maybe your right.” Remus murmured. “And you heard what he was planning something with that Karkaroff yesterday. That didn’t sound too promising.”
“Yeah but remember they mentioned someone named Potter. Maybe we should go. But I don’t want anything bad to happen.” Peter started shaking.
“Chill Peter. I’ll get my wand.” Said Remus wrapping a cloak around him.
“You have a wand?” Said Peter. “How come?”
“Well.” Said Remus, “I been living here for a while and I’ve been wandering Diagon Alley a lot and I went into the wand shop ‘Ollivanders’ and he let me buy a wand.
“Oh.”
Peter was nervous he didn’t like the idea of meeting Snape again or even facing this character Karkaroff. But they had reached the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron now and there was no turning back.
Inside, Remus leading with one hand in his pocket (handling his wand securely) and Peter trailing behind, defenceless and scared, they met Snape by the fireplace in the pub.
Snape had a sly smile on his face and said, “Well Lupin I see you do have guts.”
Remus didn’t reply. Peter kept quiet and tried to not look too timid.
The flames in the fireplace suddenly erupted and Karkaroff stepped out.
“Ah here’s my good friend Azoth.” Said Snape.
“Snape. What’s going on?” Remus said calmly trying not to look too cross.
“Me and Azoth here have a little surprise for you.” Snape said.
“What kind of surprise?” Peter answered, surprised at his own daring.
“Come forward and I’ll show you.” Snape said, holding out a gift box, “It’s just a friendly gift to celebrate Hogwarts.”
Peter edged forward.
Remus stopped him with one arm, “No! Peter don’t! This is a trick!”
“A trick ay?” Karkaroff sneered, “We’re just trying to be friends, you know. As we’re all going to the same school this year. A kind of friendship bond thingy.”
“I wouldn’t make friends with you two even if you offered me a thousand galleons.” Remus remarked.
“Well, if that’s how you feel about it-” Snape chucked some powder from within the supposedly gift box into the fire and another boy came leaping through the fire. Peter didn’t know this boy, nor did Remus by the looks on his face.
“Lucius.” Said Snape, “These boys have refused our offer of friendship.”
“Really.” Said the blonde haired boy staring at them. “Maybe we should teach these boys a lesson. Then maybe they’ll think twice about refusing our offer.”
Peter didn’t like this one bit. There were three of them now.
“What should we do?” Whispered Peter from behind his friend Remus.
“I’m thinking.” Remus answered back.
“Well think faster!” Hissed Peter.
Peter looked wildly around him for the innkeeper, but Tom was upstairs and there was no other customers here this early.
The three young wizards opposite them smiled.
“Three of us and two of you.” Said Lucius. “I think that’s fair odds don’t you.”
*
James Potter heard a knocking sound downstairs. Sighing loudly he trotted down to the front door two at a time.
His parents were at another meeting at the Ministry of Magic and they had taken a load of House-elves with them, so he was practically alone.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
“I’m comin! Calm down for Pete’s sake!”
James suddenly noticed the banging was coming from the back door.
He swivelled round and ran through the empty kitchens, through a store cupboard and into the back hall.
BANG! BANG! B-
“What?” Said James irritably.
Sirius was staring back at him with a handful of owl feathers in one hand, a ripped piece of parchment in the other hand and a face that could wipe the smile off any clown.
“THIS!” Said Sirius holding his hands out and throwing owl feathers in his face. “BAD JOKE! MY mum is gonna freak when she see’s all those owl feather. She’s allergic to birds for one thing and I know your rich and everything and can make fancy owls do tricks for you but it wasn’t funny!”
James blinked and took in the feathers and the parchment with the Hogwarts crest stamped on it.
A scream from the red brick house next door snapped him back to reality.
“So,” Said James, trying to ignore the screams of Mrs Black who had obviously seen the owl feathers. “You’re blaming me because an owl went into your room.”
“Yes!” Said Sirius, “And God knows why you keep sending me stupid things on parchment that make so sense whatsoever.”
Sirius held up the image of the Hogwarts Crest.
James’ face lit up. “Wow! This is brilliant!” He exclaimed.
“Well I don’t see what’s so brilliant about it.” Sirius said glumly.
“YOU’RE A WIZARD!” James cried, dragging a nonplussed Sirius into his mansion and shutting the door behind him.
*
Remus whipped out his wand, “At least I never came unprepared.”
“Right ahead of you.” Said Lucius, whipping his wand out too.
Remus suddenly felt uneasy, he didn’t know any duelling spells or anything; the only thing he did know was how to light up his wand.
“Not looking too bright Loopy.” Said Snape, chuckling silently.
Lucius grinned. “Accio Wand”
Remus’ wand flew from his hand and went straight into Lucius’.
“Hey, that’s not fair!” Cried Peter.
“Life’s not fair!” Lucius said. He gave Snape Remus’ wand.
Remus clenched his teeth, “Give. Me. My. Wand.”
“No,” Snape answered, “It feels safe it my hand.”
Remus charged forwards. Peter backed away.
“Impedimenta!” Lucius and Snape both cried, Lucius towards Remus and Snape towards Peter.
Both boys were frozen in their tracks.
Lucius smirked, “It’s a good thing, Karkaroff, that you managed to find that incantation for us.”
The three unfrozen boys gagged the frozen ones and tied them up and hung them upside down from a beam on the roof.
“That’ll teach you for messing with us.” Sneered Lucius. Malfoy turned to Snape and Karkaroff, “Come on, I got this great plan in store for Potter and his dirty muggle friend.”
All three of them turned towards the fireplace, each of them shouting, “Malfoy Manor” and disappearing into the flames.
Remus and Peter hung there helplessly wondering how they were going to get out of this one.
*
“I’m a WHAT!?” Sirius said sitting himself into a chair.
“A wizard.” James repeated.
“No, stop it!” Sirius stared at him in disbelief. “You’re pulling my leg, right?”
“I’m not, I’m a wizard too!”
“That’s it,” Sirius flung himself out of the chair. “I’m going, you my friend need serious medical help.”
“Why don’t you believe me?” James said, “Didn’t you read the letter?”
“What letter?” Answered Sirius.
“Come on, don’t tell me you didn’t see it.” James muttered, “that owl gave you a letter from Hogwarts.”
Sirius stared at him as if he was crazy or something.
“Ok, then,” said James and went to fetch his Hogwarts letter from his room.
James sprinted up the stairs, grabbed his letter and slid down the stair railing, skidding into the dining room to find that Sirius was gone and the back door was wide open.
*
“What’s going off here?” Cried Tom the innkeeper of the Leaky Cauldron.
Peter tried to say something but his voice was muffled from being gagged.
Tom rolled his eyes and said an incantation with his wand and the two boys were free from their binds.
Peter and Remus fell to the floor groaning in a heap.
The innkeeper sighed and muttered something with the words “boys” and “spells”.
Peter rubbed his head and looked at his friend who was trying to untie the bind around his mouth.
“Well that didn’t go so well.” Peter stated the obvious.
“You think?” Remus replied sarcastically.
Peter sulkily looked at his feet and then spotted something on the floor. “Hey, Snape must have dropped your wand before he travelled by floo.”
Remus cheered up then having had his wand again.
“I think we should go after them.” Remus said holding up his wand.
“B-b-but we don’t have any defence. You don’t know any spells or anything.” Peter said.
Remus smiled as he picked something else up off the floor, “it looks like those slimy gits dropped something else.”
Peter’s face lit up as he beheld the spell book in Remus’ hand.
Remus had it all planned, “Okay, first we need to get there.” He turned towards the fireplace. “Okay have you got the floo powder ready?”
“Yep!” Peter said.
“Did you also tell your parents that you’d be gone for awhile?” Remus continued.
“Yep, I said I’ll be wandering around Diagon Alley.”
“Good okay. I’ll go first.”
“Can’t we go at the same time?” Peter asked.
“Only if we add more floo powder.”
“Ok.” Peter tossed the powder into the roaring fire, which changed a blue colour.
Unfortunately some powder spat back into their faces and when they cried out “Malfoy Manor!” it kind of came out like “Pat-of-or Manshoon!”
*
Sirius ran upstairs after being given a humiliating birthday song by his parents.
He went into his bedroom where he saw the feathers gone. His mum had obviously tidied up and then he saw the letter on his bedside cabinet, (his mum had found while cleaning up the feathers)
Sirius was kind of surprised and after he’d read the letter, he suddenly realised James was telling the truth.
