>Chapter 3<
Rivals
Remus and Peter reached the Leaky Cauldron. Remus was abit edgy about entering the pub.
“What’s the matter?” Asked Peter, seeing his face.
Peter didn’t know, but Remus had doubts about entering this pub. You see there’s one particular boy, which lives here that he wouldn’t want to bump into too soon.
“Come on, Peter, straight through, quick.” Remus pointed to the back door leading to Diagon Alley.
“Alright Loopy.” Said an oily voice. Remus stopped in his tracks and slumped his shoulders dully.
“I say, have you brought a pet, Lupin. I should say rat’s aren’t allowed in Hogwarts.”
Remus clenched his fists and turned to the keeper of the oily voice.
It was Severus Snape. Hooked nose, greasy hair and bad breath.
“Must of cost a fortune too by the size.” Severus continued.
“One more word, Snape.” Hissed Remus, “and you’re a dead man.”
Severus laughed. “What are you going to do, set your rat on me!”
Remus lost his temper and before Peter could stop him, Remus punched Snape right smack in his face.

“MUM!” Yelled Sirius, “You never said you were going to invite the whole street!”
“Honey, don’t worry, I thought we could make knew friends.” Mrs Black was ironing a bed sheet as Sirius lay on the couch in anger.
“I can’t believe you, now there’s going to be a load of strangers in our back yard.” Sirius stomped upstairs and found to his annoyance that someone had been in his room again. But there was no mess this time, just a note on his bed.
Sirius looked at it. The note was made of some yellowy parchment and a word was scribbled on it in black ink.
Sorry
Sorry? Sirius puzzled. He looked outside in case the person who wrote this was just escaping.
“Sarah!” Said Sirius.
“What?” Came her shrill voice in the room next door.
“Did you write this?”
“Write what?”
“Nothing.” Said Sirius staring to his open window where he saw an owl flutter from where it had perched from the windowsill. What the hell is going on here?

James crossed his arms as he sat at the grand long oak dining table. He was fed up. He hated the Malfoys, he despised them, and there was something about them that he didn’t trust. Surprisingly enough, Mr and Mrs Potter were on good grounds with the Malfoys, maybe because they were both rich and had a lot of pride or maybe it was because Mr Potter and Mr Malfoy both worked in the same department at the ministry of magic. James Potter and Lucius both knew that they’d never get along, even if they were both in the same rich lifestyle.
It was a horrid meal, well the food was excellent as it always was (and more fancy for the occasion) but it tasted bitter to James when he knew he was breathing in the same room as Lucius Malfoy.
Lucius and him had a past, in which there had been a lot of arguing, a lot of fighting and so much glaring that it would have frightened even the most ferocious mountain Troll.
Albus (or I should say Professor) Dumbledore was having a deep conversation with Mr and Mrs Potter and Malfoy and the kids were sitting on the opposite end of the table, (purposely so as not to hear their talking).
James looked up as he saw Lucius whisper something in his little sister’s ear. They both sniggered in their evil way. James looked back at his half eaten plate of bouillabaisse, he could sense the sniggering voices’ eyes on him and he clenched his fists tightly.
“So, I’ve heard some dirty muggles have moved next door.” Sneered Lucius, making a disgusted gesture as he looked in the direction of the Blacks’ house.
James didn’t respond instead he just glared down at his food wishing he could just fling it into Lucius’ face.
“Anyway,” Said Lucius narrowing his eyes, “I heard they’re having a party of some sort and they had some nerve to go and invite us. I mean to say, mere muggles and the Malfoys do not match.”
James continued staring at the now cold dinner.
“I wonder have they dared to invite you?” Asked Lucius, “Or did they dislike the mere sight of you that they missed you out on their list.”
James gritted his teeth in response. He had told himself earlier that he wasn’t going to let Malfoy push him around, nor was he going to make a scene and pound him to a pulp.
Veruca let out a sly smile, “I bet he’s going to that filthy party, I bet he’s already made friends with them muggles.”
James looked up, “So what if I have? At least I treat them with respect which is more than you’ll do to any living creature.”
Lucius glared and Veruca just sucked her cheeks inwardly.
“Potter you better shut your mouth.” Declared Lucius, rather loudly.
James was going to say “well I can’t, I do need to open it to eat,” but the wizards and witches (their parents) were staring at them now, having heard Lucius’ remark.
“Well,” Said Dumbledore, getting to his feet, “I must say that the meeting is over and now I must go and see about doing my responsibilities at the school.”
James’ heart suddenly lit up as the Malfoys left the house. He knew he wouldn’t have to see that ugly face of Luicus for a long while or Veruca’s.
As Lucius left the front door he whispered something in James’ ear, which made his blood run cold.
“Don’t worry, Potter, I’ll make sure your muggle friends have a party to remember.”
James knew that couldn’t be good and he wasn’t going to think what that possibly implied.
“Oi!” Called the innkeeper of the Leaky Cauldron, Tom. “No fighting here, get out all three of yurs!”
Remus made a face at the innkeeper and stormed out the backdoor. Peter followed timidly, watching as Snape tried to hold back a bloody nose.
Remus was still angry as he walked into Diagon Alley, the blood was still rushing through his temples and a headache was about to support it.
Peter followed Remus into the alley; he looked around in wonder at all the shops and tall buildings.
It was a busy place too, even though it was the middle of the week it looked packed.
Peter watched as Remus looked behind him in case Snape was following, he was but only because he had got kicked out of the Leaky Cauldron too.
“Quick, let’s go in this shop,” Urged Remus, “Revenge from Severus isn’t pleasant.”
Peter turning white from the thought quickly scurried into the shop like an obedient dog.
Remus looked up at the shop’s name, which read Gambols and Japes Wizarding Joke Shop.
Inside both of them began admiring the different toys of mayhem that were filled along the shelves.
“Karkaroff!” Said a voice near the entrance. Remus’ eyes shot open and he pulled Peter around to another part of the shop.
“What?” Whispered Peter, quite bewildered, “What is it?”
“Shhh!” Hushed Remus, putting his fingers to his mouth.
Both of them then peered through a gap between some stacked boxes of firecrackers.
Through the gap Peter could see two figures. One was Snape and the other was another boy but Peter had never seen this one before.
These two seemed to be whispering in low voices about something.
“Remember to get some of those books with those certain incantations in, we need to practise sooner than we thought.”
That was Snape talking. Peter felt nervous, he was sure those two boys were planning something awful.
“Yeah well Severus, I need to go and meet Lucius first about some certain things.” Said the other boy and he paused for a second as if wondering, “I heard that the Malfoys have some potions we could use as well.”
“Maybe, come on lets buy some of these and go.” Snape held up a packet of some product and went to the store counter.
Peter turned towards Remus, who looked like he was grinding his teeth to powder.
“Remus,” Hissed Peter, “who was that talking to Snape?”
Remus stood quite for a few moments watching the loathsome two depart out the shop door.
“I don’t know, but I know for certain that they’re up to something and that is not going to be good at all.”
He walked to the shop window watching Snape look over his shoulder suspiciously before entering the Leaky Cauldron again. Remus decided to follow and Peter, not wanting to be left behind scurried after him.
As Peter crept into the backyard of the Leaky Cauldron he swore he could hear voices. Voices, which were secretive and harsh. And voices that sounded like boys.
“Remus.” Whispered Peter quickly, nodding his head over to where he could hear the low voices.
The voices were coming nearer as they came near the opening of the back doors of the Leaky Cauldron.
Quickly, doing the quickest thinking in his life, Peter pulled Remus behind one of the several dustbins and barrels piled up along the side of the yard.
“Heehee just wait until we see their faces.” Said Snape’s voice.
Peter peered cautiously over one of the bins. He could see Snape holding an opened letter in his hand.
“Yeah, Malfoy thinks this could be a double winner, you know with him dealing with Potter, and you…” the other boy was with Snape, the one he named as Karkaroff. The boys voice trailed off as Snape put a hand over his mouth.
“Fool!” Hissed Snape, “Anyone could be eavesdropping in a public place like this. Come on let’s leave this till tomorrow.”
“Where shall we meet?” Said the sallow faced Karkaoff.
Snape paused for a moment. “Just be in the Leaky Cauldron at 7am at the latest, Lucius expects us to be ready early. In the meantime I’ve got a letter to post.” Snape chuckled softly as Karkaoff departed back into Diagon Alley.
When both Snape and Karkaoff had gone, Remus slowly appeared from behind a dustbin.
“I don’t like the sound of that.” Declared Remus.
Peter was still behind the dustbins shaking.
Remus saw this and wondered if this boy had a medical condition. “Hey, Peter. What’s with the shaking?”
“N-n-n-nothing.” Stammered Peter.
Remus raised an eyebrow, he noticed Peter staring at something on the ground. Following Peter’s gaze he saw a baby frog.
“Peter, is there something you’re not telling me?”
Peter looked up at Remus, “Well, you see, I’m scared of frogs.”
Remus could feel the tingling urge to roar with laughter but he knew better than that. I mean this was his friend, and you should respect them even if they have abnormal phobias.
“Frogs? How come?” Asked Remus.
Peter squirmed abit and the frog hopped towards him, looking quite interested in the podgy boy.
Peter backed away and began knocking dustbins over and tripping up on them as they rolled around.
“Remus, get this frog away from me!” Cried Peter.
Remus picked up the frog and let it hop freely down Diagon Alley.
“Please don’t tell anyone, I just can’t take the humility of it.” Peter got to his feet from being sprawled on the floor.
“OK.” Promised Remus.
Peter felt really uneasy now, revealing his fear of frogs. But never the less he felt a whole lot better when he went into a shop called ‘Eyelops Magical Creatures’ and bought a black kitten.
“Wow. My very own pet.” Said Peter.
Remus suddenly looked at the time, “Cripes! I better be getting back home, my uncle will be back now and I need to be there.”
“Why?” Asked Peter.
“Personal problems.” Answered Remus, “Come on, you can name your cat on the way there.”
