I'm sorry, but I have a lot of difficulty with poetry in the creative writing class. I have to agree with Mona, where I think the poet has to give a little more imput on what the purpose of the poetry is, or some 'insight' as to why it was written. I respect the fact that the writer that may comment and say 'Well, it's personal.', that's great and all, but then, why was it submitted for critique? Should we as a class be given questions from the poet instead, such as, what were our reactions to the poetry? Were there lines that didn't work? Or should we be critiquing meaning in the poems (which leads to a treacherous and slippery path!) But definitely some sense of direction is needed when we're critiquing poetry, and in some ways I feel that the poet has a larger responceability (sue me, I can't spell) in offering questions or imput more so than if they had submitted a story.
My my, how I go on and on . . .
Erin!
