Poetry is very hard to critique because it is often so personal. And with such an unformal form of poetry such as free verse it seems the only thing to really comment on is the meaning or purpose of the poem, and as Erin said this is SUCH a slippery path. Being someone who writes alot of poetry I can say that there often isn't much anyone can say that will make me change a poem if it is written for a personal reason. That is why I am refraining from submitting my personal poetry, because honestly, I couldn't care less what others think of it. I also agree that it should be the submitters responsibility to direct the class if it is personal because otherwise what is there to say? I got the direct impression that Shannon didn't really care what we all said on tuesday (let me know if I'm wrong) which is understandable because of the type of submission it was (PERSONAL). Therefore I think it seemed like a bit of a waist of time, a joke. But then again, it's her hour, we each get our own, and if someone decides that they don't want any advice or constructive criticism then isn't it their choice? And if they do, then yes, the conversation needs to be guided. Maybe for the futur we should include questions that we specifically want answered if we have any so that they can be given as much consideration as needed... just a suggestion.
