I don't think I would go too far for my *fiction* writing. A good deal of what I (try to) write stems from things that have happened, and I wouldn't put myself or anyone else in danger or compromise my integrity or anything. I don't see anything wrong about acting retarded (I'm assuming you mean actually acting disabled rather than just acting goofy because I really need no incentive for the latter) because, were I interested in writing about someone with a disability, I'd like to see how they were treated by the public.

But, like any good MIT kid (Helen understands!) I'm thinking about going into journalism. And I think I would put myself in danger for the truth that might not otherwise get out. That sounds very abstract, I should rephrase ... I have something of a strange interest in Iraq and particularly in the trade sanctions on it, and were I able to go there and have a firsthand look at what the sanctions have done to the ordinary people there, I would ... because it's not something that the Western media likes to tell people and I feel it's something everyone should be aware of. But I don't know if I would get a dangerous story I wasn't passionate about. I'd have to wait and see.

It all really depends on each situation.
