The ringing of the phone woke Luke up, the morning sunlight blinding him as he reached for his cell phone on the table by the couch. “Hello?” Luke whispered into the phone so as not to wake the girls who were still asleep. “Hi, did I wake you?” Maria’s voice asked. “Um, no not at all.” Luke feigns. “I think you should come down here, I found something that might be very interesting to you.” Maria tells him, a bit excited. “Great, I’ll be down there in twenty minutes.” Luke tells her and hangs up. He then gets up and goes over to Laura, giving her a light shake. When she wakes up he gives her a ‘shh’ so that she won’t wake Anna up. He gestures her to come with him and she gives him a ‘not now’ look. Luke gives her a ‘wrong idea’ look as he gestures her to come over to the other side of the room with him, which she does, making sure that she doesn’t wake up Anna.
“Maria just called, she’s got something of interest to show me, I’m going to jot down there and check it out.” Luke informs her through whispers. “I’m going with you.” Laura responds with a whisper. “Okay, but I think we should let Anna sleep, she was so exhausted last night.” Luke suggests and Laura agrees with him. “Yeah you’re right, she’s exhausted, this whole thing is taking a toll on her.” Laura whispers before she quietly grabs her clothes and tip toes into the bathroom as Luke grabs a notepad and writes a note for Anna. He also writes that Mac is in the room next door. When he finishes, he looks up to see that Laura is ready and waiting. Luke leans the notepad on the table near the bed so that she’ll see it when she first wakes up. They quietly slip out the door and make their way to the courthouse, leaving Anna to sleep for a while longer.
Once Luke and Laura got down to the courthouse, they realized that Maria wasn’t alone. With her was an older gentleman that was chatting with her. “Luke, Laura, this is Dr. Ramirez, he was one of the doctors that took care of the man that was brought into the clinic by the fishermen.” Maria tells them.
“Oh, oh well hi, so great to meet you. I’m Luke Spencer, this is my wife, Laura Spencer.” Luke says with excitement, shaking Dr. Ramirez’s hand.
“Good to meet you both. Maria tells me you are looking for this man that was brought in?” Dr. Ramirez asks.
“Please to meet you.” Laura says as Dr. Ramirez shakes her hand also.
“Yes, we are looking for a friend of ours and we’re trying to figure out if the man that was brought in was him?” Luke asks.
“It was ten years ago, why now?” Dr. Ramirez asks curiously.
“Well because we were told that he was dead, we didn’t know until recently that he actually survived.” Luke explains to him.
“Ah, I see. When he came in to the clinic, he was very badly injured and very sick. He had infections through out his body. He was moved and someone destroyed the medical files on him.” Dr. Ramirez tells him and then snatches up a manila envelope from the desk. “These are the only surviving records on this man that were not destroyed.” He tells them.
“Do you know where he was taken?” Laura asks as Luke takes out the medical files and looks them over, noticing the charred edges.
“He was taken to a hospital on the main land but I don’t know which hospital.” He informs them. “Mr. And Mrs. Spencer I must warn you both, this man, he was very sick man, we feel then that he would not survive his injuries and infections.”
Luke nods. “I understand what you’re saying, and thank you so much. Is there anything else you can tell us? Like what did he look like? What did he sound like?”
“He was so badly injured that it is hard to say what he looked like. Plus I don’t know if I can remember what he looked liked. Ten years ago you know?”
“Of course, of course. But did he speak? I’m asking because our friend has an Australian accent.” Luke tells him, hopeful.
“I could not say, he was unconscious the entire time he was here and he had a breathing tube down his throat that would have prevented him from talking.” Dr. Ramirez explains to him. “Like I say, these files should help you, it has some things in there that may help you.” He then tells them.
Maria then jumps in to offer her support. “I included a list of the local hospitals that he could have been taken too, and I also included in that list a couple of the US Navel and Army Base hospitals that he might have been taken too.”
“Thank you so much.” Laura tells her gratefully.
