I think the issue here is balancing the Old and the New Testaments.

The Old Testament clearly dictates the Law. Looking at the books of Moses you'll quickly get confused with what you can and cannot do. According to Leviticus 13:40 it'd be a worried man with a pimple on his head ;)

Ultimately Jesus came to free us from the law - to bring us one step closer to God the father. Hence the tearing of the curtain when Jesus died on the cross - there is no longer any barrier between men and God.

I look at this way - God created man. Man sinned and was cast from the Garden of Eden. God then laid down a few ground rules [aka 10 commandments] - to a greater or lesser degree man still worhipped idols hence some of the great tales such as Sodom & Gomorrah - two cities wiped out effectively for their wickedness.

Much of the Old Testament prophesies the coming of Jesus, the wiping of the slate clean and the dawning of a new age - an age of forgiveness and the end of strict law.

I'm in no way saying that the commandments are no longer valid but if you look at any of the gospels Jesus was clearly a man of forgiveness, at odds with the Pharisees at almost every turn. Stone the harlot? No, befriend her, forgive her.

I am as keen to heed the words of Jesus when he says when you do unto the least of these you do unto me. Equally - I am less hung up on some of the quirky laws in the Old Testament.

So ..... have you got it wrong? No - Jesus brought a certain angle to things that no amount of floods could ;)
