If Noel was gay and if he hadn't believed that to be homosexual was ungodly, I wonder if the fellowship would have had a more balanced attitude to women, to corporal punishment of children, to celibacy and to marriage?

Many people have asked me over the years if Noel was homosexual because I think they recognised in so much that was destructive in the fellowship, the attitudes of a man in denial of his own sexuality.

Several friends who knew Noel before he led the fellowship gave me very good reason to believe that Noel was a man who all his life was trying to suppress his sexuality.

A young gay man who talked to me for several nights on the phone, who was a fringe member of the JA as a result of being bannished from a community household when he "came out", was distraught when Noel died, because he believed that only Noel could have saved him from his sexuality.

I felt so sorry for him, because if it hadn't been for Noel, I doubt if this man would have believed his sexuality was somethign he needed saving from in the first place
