Although the danger outlined above is true, it relates to damaging the body through inexperience. Another danger, which I am more concerned about is damage to the mind, which is why Kriya Yoga initiation is so regulated.

People seem to think it is about keeping a secret, which it is to an extent. It preserves the lineage. The other reason it is regulated is, Kriya Yoga, when practiced by someone not already spiritually aware, can cause a very extreme paradigm shift. Kriya Yoga is a very powerful form of meditation, and if initiation is not guided, particularly if ones mind is not primed for the experience, ones perception of reality and self will become extremely confusing, which can become a source of severe mental illness.

Only ever attempt the breathing techniques of Kriya Yoga if a qualified Guru feels you are ready for it. The secrecy is such not just to protect the technique and lineage, but to protect the unprimed mind.
