The funny thing is, Muhammad used to meditate in a cave, and that is when on the "night of power" (lailat-al-qadr) he apparently ganined enlightenment/word of God.

This was in his earlier years before he had gained a following and (wordly) power. In my opinion his "enlightenment" was probably at best just some passing illumination. You will find that as he gained power through military conquest his message (i.e. the Koran) became much less accomidating towards Christians and Jews. You know what they say about power corrupting...
