I find it hard to believe Buddha would be horrified by anything. Hes probably aware of how his teachings are being presented in this day and age.

He would be the first to understand that various people's capacity to understand his teaching depends largely on their degree of spiritual evolution, and he wouldnt fault those who mistake his personality for his message. And yet, this doesnt necessarily mean he will fail to point out the pitfalls of being caught up in the personality.

And why do saints and Avatars teach that it is alright to seek Truth by meditating on their personal forms and qualities? Because they know that by becoming one with them through concentrated devotion, people can arrive at the formless, featureless Absolute anyway. Krishna actually recommends this path for the vast majority of seekers.
