The process to which you refer, rolling the tongue back, is called nabho mudra. There are many mudra's and bandhas in the SRF meditation and Kriya instruction that are not distinctly singled out by name, but they are described (so therefore the injunction in the lessons to follow the directions exactly.) This is one of those... nabho mudra is mentioned in the Gheranda Samhita:

"3:9 [Nabho Mudra] -
Pursuing any livelihood, in any location, a yogi may practice nabho mudra. Turn the tongue upwards [and back towards the soft palate, so the underside of the tongue is touching the upper palate...

[This modified technique allows the practitioner to enjoy the benefits of kechari mudra, without having to spend months in unnecessary self-mutilation, cutting the frenulum linguae (the tendon beneath the tongue). This is why the text says, it can be done by a person of any livelihood, at any time or place.]" (from http://www.classicyoga.org/texts/Gheranda-1.html, copyright 2002 by Robert Wisehart)

Talabaya mudra, on the other hand, is an energetic exercise. When performed correctly, it produces a certain sound. Obviously nabho and talabaya both can stretch the frenum...but SRF students are not taught talabaya.

If you are an SRF student, have faith that in following the directions, you will get the benefits. This is faith in Guru, because that was the Guru's promise.
