"The ceremony for Sannyasa and Naistik Brahmacharya also means the symbolic burning up of all earthly limitations, which even includes one’s physical body! It is, in a way, comparable to the last Kriya Rites accorded to a deceased person in the Hindu tradition. The remarkable feature of this initiation is that the monk is formally dead to the world, thus opening the way to a life of complete detachment. In the above cases, one entered the monastic order as it was reinstituted by the great Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya. The sannyasis of this Hindu order are variously graded according to their different temperaments, tendencies, and actual realisation. A particular individual may conform to these stages, which point to a gradual throwing off of all physical and mental limitations. Transcendence results when the world is realised to be unreal.

In the Sannyasa Upanishads, six types of Sannyasis are described. First is the Kutichaka, who is followed by the Bahudaka. Next come the Hansa and Paramahansa. The last two are the Avadhuta and the Turiyatita. The first two live permanently confined to monasteries, either alone or in groups. The Hansa roams freely, wandering from place to place, seldom staying anywhere longer than three days. The Paramahansa lives free from all formal bindings and vows. He may be found in a cave or in a palace, in the forest or in cities. The Avadhuta lives in all or any condition, dressed or naked, mind completely at peace. The rare Turiyatita Mahatma has no consciousness of his bodily or mental functions limited to his individual existence." -- Swami Jnanananda Giri, in "The Transcendent Journey"
