There are many stories in Kriya Tradition about this.
Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee recounts one in his book PURANA PURUSHA YOGIRAJ SRI SHAMA CHURN LAHIREE -

“Yogiraj would often practice Kriyasadhana throughout the night and go for a holy dip in the Ganges at Ranamahal Ghat in the morning. His great devotee, Krishnaram would accompany Him. While Yogiraj would go for the dip, he would be in a thoroughly rapt state and totter like a drunkard. On the roadside there was a betel leaf shop. Seeing Yogiraj in this drunken state, the shop keeper would make fun and comment----“Today He is drunk again. Look at this Bengali gentleman, He is intoxicated having drunk such a lot in the morning”.

There are many stories like this in Kriya Tradition ( or yoga traditon. See the life of Ramakrishna and all the stories of this). One learns them from the guru and learns their meaning from the Guru.
And so we all go to our individual gurus or their represntatives to learn the traditon and the meaning.
