I also knew the story from the "Jerusalem" hymn. From the sleeve notes of a CD of mine:

This recital begins with Jerusalem, composed in 1916 and published on 3 January 1917. Written when Parry [composer of the hymn] was 68, it was to be his last and greatest success. It concerns the legend of Joseph of Arimathea, who was alleged to have brought the infant Jesus to Glastonbury in about 10AD, and the planting of the Glastonbury Thorn. This was a symbol of the implanting of Christianity in Somerset, and indeed in all England. The thorn is still in the garden of the ruins of Glastonbury, while at nearby Chalice Well is the cup claimed as the Holy Grail, that used by Jesus at The Last Supper. It is a magnificent piece of Phoenician (Syrian coastal) glass.

I have a book, "Glastonbury - Avalon of the Heart" by Dion Fortune, but I never read it. In Germany it has been published as part of a series of travel guides although the author was a magician or cult leader or something.
