Subject: Copyrighting Yoga

It seems that Bikram Choudry, a former student of P Yogananda's younger brother Bishnu Charan Ghosh, has been able to copyright/patent 26 Hatha Yoga postures. His lawyers have sent various threatening letters to unauthorised yoga teachers demanding royalties and the meeting of other conditions.

Choudry arrived in California in 1972, and his students have included Shirley MacLaine, Raquel Welsh and Madonna. I have not been able to discover exactly what Choudry's copyrights cover. Are these postures traditional Hatha Yoga asanas or inventions of Choudry? If anyone has any information I would be very interested.

It raises a number of interesting questions, such as whether or not Kriya techniques can be patented.

How though can anyone claim a copyright on the postures someone adopts with their body? Personally I intend to apply for a copyright on the act of breathing, however I will permit anyone reading at this board to use my technique and continue to breathe (for a small fee).
