The concept of Satan is within Hindu "mythology" also, although in that scene it is thought of more as an impersonal force that can take on a personal form, much like the Spirit of God can take form.

Yogananda's whole message is that there is no difference among religions, so to say he could be more Christian-oriented than Hindu is narrow. Using the term Satan for the benefit of a western audience is very practical IMO and this is what he did.

He had the understanding of what Satan is through his own direct experience; if you will remember the boat trip back to America when Satan took form and tried to kill him. So it was no mere concept he was expounding when later he admitted he had been wrong about Satan. He himself said that he had once thought Satan to be imaginary but that his experiences showed him otherwise.

What bothers you is your discomfort with the concept of Satan from an orthodox Chritstian viewpoint. Do not confuse it with the reality of Satan as a real force, which transcends the boundaries of formalized religions just like the Spirit of God transcends these. In actual fact, the concept of a conscious delusory force, sometimes manifesting in a personal form, is present and alive in all religious traditions (even Vedanta, they just speak of a state above and beyond the play of light and dark).
