In reply to: ANON - 22 Aug 2003 's message, "Re: P. Yogananda an 'avatara' ?" on 13:02:27 10/25/03 Sat

Ultimately, what does it matter whether this discussion board comes to an agreement whether Yogananda was or was not an avatara?

Ultimately one has to discover for ONESELF the truth of the matter (or of the spirit) of this question by inwardly-directed efforts of self-examination, in order to see for oneself who is or is not an avatara. or what exactly is or is not an avatara. No other way will suffice.

All of this discussion is like talking and talking and talking about whether or not the nation of China (or wherever) actually exists, when at some point it would be far better to quit talking less about the subject and instead start aiming one foot in front of another and start toward where you are supposing this destination lies. Otherwise, it's all too much like endlessly sitting around with a bowl of popcorn and speculating who is going to win the next superbowl.

While the following alleged paraphrasation proves nothing, strictly speaking, somewhere a close disciple of Master was quoted as saying that Yogananda said that "a work [Yogananda's worldwide work] of this magnitude would have to be started by such a one" [i.e., an avatar]. But, once again, ultimately what does it matter whether this statement is true or not? Eventually, one has no choice but to prove it in the only way it can finally be proved -- in the laboratory of direct experience. Yogananda was allegedly quoted as saying soemthing directly along the lines of, "Science is to the laboratory as religion is to meditation." So all of this talk - while it has some value - surely, in many cases, is also to a great extent like a puppies chasing their tails, no?

Much of this discussion is like speculative archaeology, not the blood sweat and tears of the experimentalist behind the test tubes.

imho
